Journalist drives Passat BlueMotion 1.6 liter TDI 1,531 miles/2464 km on a single tank of fuel

Sunday Times journalist Gavin Conway has set a world record by driving a Volkswagen Passat 1,531 miles (2464 km) on a single tank of fuel.

The Passat was fitted with VW's most efficient diesel engine - the 1.6 liter TDI (105 PS /250 Nm) with BlueMotion technology that includes a stop/start system for improved fuel-economy. No modifications were made to the car. It was a standard production model.

Conway used exactly 77.25 liters of diesel fuel on the drive which meant a fuel-economy figure of exactly 90 miles per gallon (imperial) or 3.1 liter/100 km - way above the standard combined cycle rating of 64.2 mpg (4.4 liter/100 km).

The event was documented by representatives of the Guinness Book of World records who confirmed the record.

BlueMotion technology on the Passat includes a lower ride height, low roll-resistance tires, aerodynamic bodywork, a stop/start system and programmed battery charging. BlueMotion technology is also available on the Polo and Golf models.

Jea, But that was perfect ride in the right speed and all that crap. In real life you could never have 3.1 liter per 100km. You would have lets say above 5.5L. And the driving would be so boring.

You've obviously never driven a small diesel engine; I'm driving a 1.5 with no of the aids of this Passat and I'm not managing at all the engine. And I get 5,5l in city trafic and 4.1l outside the city! I had once tried to respect all the speed limits taking it easy on the engine also and for 200 km of combined cycle I got 3,7l. I don't see why an all new Passat with a new engine and all the help to reduce consumption shouldn't have that average. I reckon it will do with a not so boring driving method easily 4,5l in combined city/highway trafic

For a 1.6l diesel engine in such sized passat, it's amazing how they ca reach such great fuel economy. I think it's just great!

Even if you have a light foot, theres traffic and stopping and things like wind resistance. How did the driver get 90mpg average when it should be closer 60, and thats the economy rating which u rarely get close to. I think theres something the article is not explaining.

I don't know if it's very promissing or too colorful. Empty roads, no traffic jams, no lights, then it could be possible...
