Mercedes has officially unveiled the 2011 CLS-Class.

Drawing design cues from the Shooting Brake Concept, the CLS features flared wheel arches, a sloping roofline, and optional LED headlights. Inside, the cabin boasts leather upholstery, wood trim, and bright metal accents.

When it is launched in January, two models will be available - the 195 kW (265 PS / 262 hp) CLS 350 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY and the 225 kW (306 PS / 302 hp) CLS 350 BlueEFFICIENCY. Two months later, the 150 kW (204 PS / 201 hp) CLS 250 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY will be added to the lineup. In April, the 300 kW (408 PS / 402 hp) CLS 500 BlueEFFICIENCY will greet eager consumers.

In Germany, pricing starts at €59,857 and the configurator is already online.

The new CLS - design icon and technology trendsetter

With its fascinating and sensuous design and its cultivated sporting character, the new-generation CLS benefits from the fact that, as founder of the segment, Mercedes-Benz is a full generation ahead. All engines in the CLS are new and deliver fuel consumption improvements of up to 25 percent compared with the outgoing models. Also contributing to this increased efficiency is the electro-mechanical direct steering, which celebrates its premiere in the CLS.

The highest level of efficiency is the common denominator in all four engines
featuring in the new CLS. All the power units have increased output and torque compared with their predecessors, while fuel consumption has dropped by up to 25 percent. When sales begin in Europe in January 2011, it will be available in two six-cylinder engine variants - the CLS 350 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY with 195 kW (265 hp) and the CLS 350 BlueEFFICIENCY with 225 kW (306 hp). They will also feature the ECO start/stop function as standard. Just two months later, the engine range will be expanded by the CLS 250 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY with 150 kW (204 hp). In the ECE fuel cycle it consumes only 5.1 liters of diesel/ 100 km. The CLS 500 BlueEFFICIENCY with a V8 engine and 300 kW (408 hp) will follow in April. Both of these variants are also equipped as standard with the ECO start/stop function that Mercedes-Benz will offer in more than 50 models throughout its entire product portfolio by mid-2011.

Dr. Weber, "For us, the new CLS is a design icon and technology trendsetter at the same time. On the one hand, this fascinating automobile functions as a guide for our future design language. At the same, the new CLS substantiates our assertion of technological leadership."

The new CLS also set benchmarks in the field of safety. Features of the new four-door coupe include twelve intelligent driver assistance systems. Furthermore, the CLS is the first car in the world available with optional innovative high-performance LED headlamps. These combine for the first time the Intelligent Light System already available in Mercedes models with bi-xenon headlamps with LED technology.

Dr. Zetsche, "The CLS brings together all typical Mercedes values - excellent safety and first-class comfort are as much a part of it as outstanding efficiency, impressive dynamics and unmistakable style. The original four-door premium coupe is a clear example of what we mean by ‘contemporary luxury'."

It is way to convoluted for my tastes and that interior is just bland. It lacks so many of the things I loved about the first one.

Exterior is ok but for $80,000 + i was expecting more from the interior.Interior needs higher grade materials and more dramatic design than E-class just tarted up.

Like the first one, all it is is a "tarted up" e-class...

Straining to be distinctive, the Ponton infection seems to be growing. From some angles, it makes me glad that Ford has never allowed four door Mustang concepts to come to fruition. Perhaps in another eight years Mercedes will rediscover the simplicity which made their cars elegant. In the mean time, it looks like they are further experimenting with the oragami look.

My thoughts exactly! (Like litterally...kinda weird actually...) After Sacco left it seems they drove right off a styling cliff. With all the ponton going around now at least they've realized they have an identity. Can't wait for the classic lines and simplicity to come back as "retro"...

I think its gonna look even better live! I love the interior. Im so glad they didnt copy the interior of the E class. I also like that they kept the old AMG wheels. They look awesome.

An evolution on the original CLS but would've liked it if the sides looked less busy. Looks good but not great.

Nice car, but, I dont think it will fit nicely with other 4 doors coupe like the Maserati QP or Aston Rapide, I think it is missing a sense of glamour, I was hopping they make a 4 door SL, but that is not ... Still better than a Porsche Panamera (Yikes!)

I really like it. I think people are missing the point comparing it to Aston Rapide/Porsche Panamera this is 1/2 or 1/3 the price. Maybe MB will make an S-Class sized 4 door coupe

Looks very good to me. The fact that all the comparisons are to the original shows that there is still no direct competition. The Rapide is way too expensive to compare with this. Whether its better than the original is hard to say I like and dislike things about both versions. I think the Shooting Brake is the best design but whether they should produce it? I think maybe not. I also thought an S Class 4 dr coupe is a possibility. As for the Bruno Sacco fans MB could not continue to produce such bland cars consistently or they would have gone the way of Cadillac and Rolls before their revivals and be an old persons car. Maybe those Sacco fans need to look further back and see what Benz was in the 30's when they made the SSK or even 50's with the original SL. Sacco was not that great considering Benz history. Cars like this can make Benz truly great again imagine a S-Class 4dr coupe I think it would be great.

Cadillac and Rolls' slip from grace was not even minutely based on design/styling but was instead a engineering based problem, where the competition produced considerably superior products, at a cheaper price. I understand why some don't consider Sacco a great (he was an engineer and not a stylist after all), but how can you argue with the numbers? In no other point in history has the Mercedes name (and star) meant as much as during his reign. Those 30 years were the high point in Mercedes-Benz quality and brand recognition. Do you think thats a coincidence? Or do you consider having engineers running both R&D and the design department cheating?

I have to disagree. Firstly Benz quality was well established long before Sacco, so he did not invent quality at Benz. Secondly the new design direction was indeed to attract younger buyers, Cadillac & Rolls had additional problems beyond just styling true. Name one truly classic design under Sacco era I dare you, I can't think of any. Sales does not = great design. Sacco was booted after the bloated S-Class of the 90's. If Styling was not the main issue for Rolls and Cadillac let me ask you this will you buy a CTS V over an E 63 AMG the CTS V is faster around the Ring? Now imagine if the E63 AMG looked like a 90's S Class choice becomes alot tougher doesn't it.

I think the R129 SL is a modern classic. While zot959 might regard Benz quality as having been established in the 60s (pre-Sacco), there were many robust and reliable products in the 60s and I don't think Mercedes truly distinguished itself until the 1970s. The 90s arrived with a challenge of premium brands from Japan and Mercedes lowered their MSRP on the E class for the first time during the slump. The W140 S class answered engineering questions that consumers weren't asking. (It wasn't a bad looking car, but unlike BMW 7 series, AMG tuning alone couldn't remedy the stodgy character.) Reliability dropped when pushing the electronics envelope for BMW and Mercedes in the 90s. Even though they are still great cars, they've somehow lost something along the way, namely the vault-like solidity and the styling that enabled a Mercedes to wear well for decades. Mercedes probably did need to tweak it's image, but it seems as though they've lost touch with core Mercedes attributes that made a Mercedes a Mercedes. (Just open and close the door of a new SL.) For me, it makes them less special.

I agree, Mercedes-Benz was known for quality long before Sacco. But, like I stated above, it just so happens during his reign their quality peaked. The design change was definitely to attract younger buyers. I consider the W126 coupe (560SEC) a styling classic, and many agree with me. And, Sacco was NOT booted for W140 s-class problems, he was responsible for its successor, W220. The w220 is a piece of electrical trash compared to all the s-classes that preceded it, but it sold well because it "looked good" (shows how smart the "average" consumer is). Unlike most consumers, I'm not one who bases any decisions on looks. I'd rather make the educated decision and buy the superior product, so, to answer your question, no I wouldn't pick the E63 to begin with. The CTS is the smarter buy... By the way, I own a 93 s-class, greatest car Mercedes ever made...
