Saab and BMW agree to share engines - report
Will debut on the next 9-3?
According to a recent report, Saab and BMW have reached an agreement to share engine technology.
Details are limited, but Bloomberg says the deal will give Saab access to BMW's upcoming 222 hp (166 kW / 225 PS) engine. It will apparently debut on the next-generation 9-3 and could be offered on the 9-5.
While the two have agreed to share that particular engine, they are still in talks about diesel technology and using a Mini platform for the 9-2.
A press conference is rumored for tomorrow, September 29th, so stay tuned for continuing coverage.

well that's nice.. except for the mini platform part. why do they want to use such a small platform for a golf contender? (or isnt the 9-2 a bit larger than the golf?)

A 222hp BMW engine...I guess that's BMW's long awaited turbo 4 cylinder gasoline engine. That's a smart move for Saab, not so much for BMW. That will mean the new 9-3 will have the same engine as the new 3-series, both scheduled for 2012. Why would BMW supply a direct competitor with their engines?!? The engines are one of BMW's unique selling points...
I thought Saab and BMW would cooperate only on the Mini platform and engine. Which would make sense since BMW already cooperated with Mercedes and PSA for various Mini parts.
Hmm...let's see how this all will work out...

An engine isn't the entire car. Saab will still be riding on it's own or handed down GM platforms aside from the Mini. Also, the 3 series in the US is offered only with BMW's inline 6, besides that, the 3 series is RWD whereas the Saab most likely will be FWD.

At least it is a possibility to Saab start making his own cars again and stop mocking or mimicking himself.
