Mark Webber extended his championship lead to 11 points on Sunday night, despite finishing on the lowest step of the podium and colliding with Lewis Hamilton during a long and hot Singapore grand prix.

The Australian finished behind pole sitter and winner Fernando Alonso, as well as his Red Bull teammate Sebastian Vettel.

At the chequered flag just before the 2 hour time limit was up, Ferrari's Spaniard and German Vettel were separated by just 3 tenths of a second.

But Vettel's points gap to Webber, who was a further half minute behind the leading battle at the finish, is still more than 20 points.

Webber's closest challenger is now Alonso, who has won the last two races from pole position in the resurgent Ferrari.

He leapfrogs Hamilton in the drivers' standings, after the Briton retired for the second race in a row due to a collision.

This time his clash was with Webber, whose RB6 was sporting significant damage to its wheel and tyre in parc ferme after the race.

Hamilton's MP4-25 came off worse, and he came close to writing off his title chances after retiring at mid-distance.

"Let's just hope myself or Jenson can do it," said the 2008 world champion, who remains five points ahead of teammate Jenson Button's sister car.

"20 points is massive and with four races to go that is a big gap," Hamilton told reporters.

Button confirmed: "There is everything to play for."

Damm that is one amazing race from singapore & double dnf for Lewis, it sucks & a big ball of flames from the lotus car is something I haven't seen. Go Mark Go.

Indeed, it was a great race! Lewis was trying to take advantage of DiGrassi's and Webber's plight to overtake them, it is like killing two birds with a stone. Sadly, it didn't work. Was surprised that the Lotus-Cosworth car caught fire at the main straight, in front of the pit building and main grandstand. Thankfully, Kovalainen did not suffer any injuries.

they need to be much tougher on backmarkers. digrassi caused the whole problem with webber and hamilton. he blocked, changed direction and caused the chain reaction. incident was 50/50, good on hamilton for having a go, good on webber for fighting for his position (would he have done so earlier this year?) hamilton will now know not to assume mark will yield. schumacher did a great job of allowing front runners through and not affecting the race for alonso/vettel, the new guys need to learn to get out of the way. remember kovalainen's amateur effort getting out of webber's way (what would his points lead be like if he hadnt had that dnf)

backmarkers where bloody useless, apart from schumi he did excellent. really tough race for him. i am really happy to see hamilton going for it but two DNF's in a row. we wont remember drivers for having a go and crashing out too often, he needs to finish and put pressure on, he could have been leading! Perfect race from Alonso, starting to show why he is so good. what i LOVED was Kubica destroying the middle pack including massa in the final laps! awesome drive, great GP

About Webber, he made that incident with Hamilton to look like a normal race incident but I still think it was intentionally done. It can be clearly seen that Hamilton already passed him in the corner, close its angle, so he should hit the brakes... he was clearly positioned bad for the entering in that corner. But this is not the first time when it happens, other championships were also decided by incidents like this one.

Its the overtaking drivers responsibility to make the overtake stick, not the driver being overtaken. Hamilton chose a wider line than Webber that gave him advantage and allowed him to get an edge in front of Webber, but that meant he was wide for the next corner. Thats a trade-off he made that Webber didn't. It came unstuck because rather than ensuring he was clear of Webber before he re-entered the racing line he just barged across when Webber was still along side him. End of the day, Webber was racing his line, Hamilton another, but Hamilton didn't check to see if he was clear to enter Webber's racing line before he barged across, and with him doing the overtaking, thats his responsibility. Hamilton's mistake, again.

seemed like both of them were at fault in this situation. Hamilton definitely had more space and Webber went rather wide in the inside line even though he needed to be far left for the next turn. Sucks for Lewis but the real disappointment is the spread between him and Vettel... how the heck did he lose that much time to Alonso and Seb? Next races would've been really insane if Webber got a drive through penalty for that.
