Ferrari SA Aperta 599 roadster revealed
Ferrari SA Aperta 599 open-top first photos 24.09.2010

Following reports of a private viewing in Pebble Beach earlier this month, Ferrari has revealed first photos and details of the SA APERTA, a drop-top version of the 599.  Production is limited to only 80 units all of which have been pre-sold.

The significance of the 80 units pays tribute to styling firm and long time Ferrari partner, Pininfarina, for their 80th anniversary.  The SA nomenclature also pays tribute to both Sergio and Andrea Pininfarina.

Described as a true roadster, a removable soft top design is used which Ferrari describes should "be resorted to only if the weather gets particularly bad."  Other body alterations include a lower-angled windscreen, integrated roll-bars flanked by aerodynamic fins and a lowered suspension.

The chassis has been stiffened to compensate for the absence of the roof, however, Ferrari states that any added weight brought on by the re-engineering of the chassis is negligible.

The SA Aperta is equipped with the familiar 6.0-liter V12 producing 670 PS (493 kW / 661 bhp), same as the recently announced 599 GTO, the road-going version of the 599XX track car.

The SA Aperta makes its public debut in Paris next week.

The SA APERTA - the most exclusive Ferrari ever takes centre stage at Paris. A new V12 to celebrate Pininfarina's 80th anniversary.

Maranello, 24th September 2010 - Ferrari is delighted to announce the presentation of the SA APERTA at the Paris International Motor Show 2010. This is a special series model of which a strictly limited number of just 80 will be built. All have already been sold. Ferrari chose to build 80 SA APERTAs in celebration of Pininfarina's 80th anniversary. The SA nomenclature also pays homage to both Sergio and Andrea Pininfarina whose company and work have been linked to the most successful road-going cars ever built at Maranello.

The SA APERTA is a true roadster which allows its occupants to enjoy the superlative emotions afforded by our signature front-engined V12 architecture in a completely open-top setting. In fact, it has just a light soft top designed to be resorted to only if the weather gets particularly bad. A low-slung windscreen and the fact that it crouches lower to the ground than our other models lend the SA APERTA an exceptionally aerodynamic sleekness. Its profile arches back from the A-post to two aerodynamic fins beautifully integrating the two roll-bars which themselves cleverly mimic the outline of the seats.

The chassis has been redesigned to deliver a standard of stiffness comparable to that of a closed berlinetta and there is a negligible weight difference also, thanks to work done on the chassis structure.

Thanks to the 670 CV engine beneath its bonnet, the SA APERTA beautifully embodies the sporty spirit of the 599, incorporating Ferrari's most advanced technology to deliver absolutely benchmark performance and superb driving pleasure. Its interior too is stylishly sporty with particularly sophisticated materials, trim and colours used throughout. The virtually endless combinations available guarantee that each and every SA APERTA is absolutely unique.

LOL, are some of you guys blind, or just stupid little boys, the 599 has NO resemblance to the Corvette. I think it time you guys went back to you play pen and play with your hot wheels. Now back to the matter on hand. I wouldn't have gone with the two tone. The A and C pillar should really be all one colour.

very sad to see people with bad eyes. if you see identical lines of the 599 with a corvette you really need to check your eyes.

I love how people think that because it's red, has to seats, and an engine at the front people think it looks like a Corvette. Some people just have no idea what they are talking about.

It might be an impressive car, but it's not a beautiful car. The 599 GTB is not a beautiful car either.

I'm sorry but the general profile is very similar to a Corvette. Sure the lines and the dimensions are different but to the untrained eye the basic profile is very similar. But that's not a bad thing, for the same reason that a bubble is round. It's round because that is the most efficient shape for the surface tension to hold in the air pressure (ever seen K-Pax?). This car is shaped like a Corvette because the Chevrolet engineers have spent years perfecting the front engine rear drive layout to create the best car possible. So it's easy to see how other manufacturers will come to the same end result.

Yes it's easy to see the resemblance but a fine line distinguishes between an Italian masterpiece and an American sports car that looks like it was drawn by Hot Wheels.

To the untrained eye. As this is a car enthusiast community, I would think that we all have trained eyes. Many cars have similar shapes. It the subtleties in styling, attention to detail and engineering that make the difference between a $50k Chevy and a $350k Ferrari.

Wow 2 hot wheels references on the same article! C-mon lets try to get original, couldn't somebody here say something about Matchbox? And boxter127, you hit it right on the head the biggest difference here is the price. But one thing; with the vents, horsepower output, and handling capabilities that puts this thing into the ZR1 category and that's just over $100,000.

@gearhead: The Ferrari and the ZR1 are two completely different animals. They are not even in the same league, let alone category.

Everybody take a deep breath and just chill. I'm not saying that the Corvette is better or not. And by category I mean 2 doors, 2 seater, front engine, rear drive, sport car. And my eyes are fine, I personally don't think these cars look alike at all. If you actually read my post I just stated that the general profile and architecture are similar. Is Lightning McQueen a Dodge Viper? No McQueen has eyes and a mouth, but if one passes you at 200mph and you barely cought a glimpse then maybe they could get confused for one another. And about this car community having trained eyes, not all do. I have read a bunch of comments about how the Panamera looks good! Talk about needing your eyes checked.

wow.. i won't say that it looks beauttiful.. but it certainly is dramatic.. and all you corvette fans.. lemme tell you that if this turns up on a boulevard.. nobody is going to confuse this with a corvette.. even a ZR1..

How can you say that an Italian exotic and a American sportcars have the same lines. please thats the joke of the century. they are nothing alike. a vette was design in a couple of weeks by a couple of guys saying, yeah that looks good, now lets throw in a overpowered engine that will cost less to produce but probably will burn it self out in a year tops. Ferrari are craftsmen of the highest quality, and take honor when whey designing their cars.

My favorite part, "will burn it self out in a year tops." These engines have been proven for over 13 years as being reliable. They are the most popular choice in engine swaps, and are even used in aircrafts! Google the word "Ferrari" followed by any of these words: burn, fire, melt, flames, ashes, inferno, heat, shield, engulfed... you get the idea.

Gearhead - ahh maybe you should recheck, the engine wasn't that caught fire, it was the material keeping the heatshield attached to the car and that was only the 458. plus GM has to do more recalls in one month than Ferrari has to do in a year.

 B_M_Gearhead B_M_Gearhead
Didn't say it was the engine that caught fire, I am very well aware of the cause that's why I put heat and shield as some of the examples. And if you want to get technical the exhaust system is a part of the engine. Without it the car will not run it is as important as the intake, fuel system, or cooling system. The exhaust being integral to engine function makes any device that has to do with control of heat transfer from the exhaust vital to engine function as well. So the engine did fail, it made heat that one of its systems failed to control. Also Chevy makes many more types of vehicles in one month than Ferrari makes in a lifetime. I have seen all of these recalls and while some are kind of sketchy there has never been so many that would result in fire and death that would result in the same ratio of vehicles produced/vehicles affected, as Ferrari. My Equinox has a recall, the dash lights may go out.... "OH NO!!!!", my Silverado had a recall, the tailgate may rattle....."OH NO!!!!", the steering wheel makes a clunking noise...."OH NOOO!!!!". I'll take minor inconvenience over skin grafts any day thank you.
