 Subaru introduces next-generation Boxer engine
New Subaru Boxer Engine 2010

New engine improves fuel efficiency by 10 percent and features more torque than its predecessor

Subaru has developed the third-generation of its 2.0 liter, 4-cylinder Boxer engine which will be fitted into future Subaru models.

The newly developed version of the horizontally-opposed engine features new bore and stroke dimensions (84 x 90 mm compared to the previous 92 x 75 mm), for improved combustion. The new engine achieves a 10 percent improvement in fuel efficiency compared to its predecessor.

The 2.0 liter Boxer still makes 109kW (148 PS / 146 bhp) but gets more torque - now 196 Nm compared to 191 Nm for the earlier generation.

As compared to V-shaped or inline configurations, a horizontally-opposed engine can sit lower in the engine bay, making for a lower center of gravity for the car which improves safety and performance. A horizontally-opposed engine also balances vibrations from pistons on the left and right side of the motor, canceling each other out and reducing vibration and noise.

The new Boxer engine will make its debut in the Forester model.

Sorry for this question but can any body here tells me what's the meaning of a BOXER engine?

Hi GRAVE. Check out this link when you get a chance, I think that it will help show the differences between various engines. In my humble opinion, the Boxer engine type is the BEST. I wish it were easier to package, because it would be the best configuration for an internal combustion engine. http://auto.howstuffworks.com/question366.htm

Since everyone's listing their favorite engines here, I'll throw in my 2 cents. Straight six is the best engine, sorry internet ;)

"2.0 liter Boxer still makes 109kW"??? My 06' 2.0R had 118kw. Seems Subaru have found that 2nd reverse gear and are making good use of it. Sadly the figures indicate an epic fail afaics :( Very sad.

I think you failed to consider that the same engine can produce varying amounts of power, depending on the market. Some territories employ stringent emissions control and the like, leaving an engine in that country slightly lower powered than the exact unit in a country without such regulations. Usually ecu mapping, or intake/exhaust flows are to blame for the power differences. Without knowing which territory the article's quoted power figures originated from, its dumb to criticize the new engine.

maybe because its now 10% more fuel efficient?

The torque has increased at the expense of power. The torque curve has also been spread significantly... I noticed the narrowness of the torque curve in my 2006 Impreza and that was about the only improvement I could have made a bigdeal about... They are playing with software parameters more than the actual hardware.

So when will the Turbocharged version appear in the WRX or FT-86 coupe, 2012 or 2013?

Since boxer engines do not have balancer shafts to counteract vibrational forces, they should be inherently more efficient, but unfortunately they just aren't, this has always puzzled me. In addition 10% improvement in fuel efficiency for a brand new engine that has been left largely alone since the late 90's is diabolically bad, especially since the power rating has barely changed.

If it doesn't burble like the older engines, I won't be best pleased.

Mikeado, it is still a BOXER so expect the burble in plenty!
