2014 Lotus Elite: The hybrid convertible supercar

2014 Lotus Elite: The hybrid convertible supercar

An Esprit for the 21st century?

The mystery of Lotus' teaser campaign has been solved as the company has released the first details about the 2014 Elite.

Meant to redefine modern classic, the 2+2 is a stunning piece of engineering and design. Despite being relatively compact (4.60m long, 1.90m wide, and 1.32m tall), Lotus has managed to give the car dramatic styling and a retractable hard top.

If that isn't impressive enough, the Elite is powered by a 5.0-liter V8 engine with 620 PS (456 kW / 612 hp) and 720 Nm (531 Nm) of torque. While official data is still pending, Lotus expects the 1,650kg (3,638 lb) car will accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 3.5 to 3.7 seconds and hit a top speed of 315 km/h (196 mph).

More importantly, the Elite will also be offered as a hybrid. Details are slim, but the company says the car will have a hybrid gearbox (with integrated electric motors) and a Kinetic Energy Recovery System (KERS). Thanks to the eco-friendly technology, the Elite hybrid will offer emissions as low as 215 g/km.

According to Lotus CEO Dany Bahar, "There's no denying that the Elite is breathtakingly beautiful to look at but it's so much more than that, it's a car that over delivers in all other aspects as well. One could say it's a car of perfect contradictions, it's compact yet spacious, high performing yet low emitting, lightweight yet still reassuringly solid. It's a car that we are exceptionally proud of at Lotus and we truly believe that there is nothing else like it out there both in terms of styling and performance."

Scheduled to go on sale in the spring of 2014, the Elite has a tentative base price of £115,000 (including a VAT of 17.5%)

Expression of Exclusivity

Ten days ahead of the official unveil at the Paris Motor Show the sun starts to rise for the dawn of Lotus' new era - the Elite will redefine "modern classic".

So here it is, the Lotus Elite, the first taste of what's to come from Lotus in the future. Look up elegant in the dictionary and you'll find variations on the following 1. dignified grace in appearance, movement, or behaviour, 2. superb taste in design, style and 3. something elegant; the ultimate refinement.

The ground-breaking new Elite is exactly that. It's compact yet chic body is elegance incarnate. It's not only exquisitely elegant, in keeping with Lotus' core values, it's a car of substance incorporating some of the very latest technological innovations Lotus has to offer. The slick retractable hard top version and the optional use of hybrid technology with KERS are typical examples of Lotus tailoring technology to deliver perfect performance.

Dany Bahar, CEO of Group Lotus said: "There's no denying that the Elite is breathtakingly beautiful to look at but it's so much more than that, it's a car that over delivers in all other aspects as well. One could say it's a car of perfect contradictions, it's compact yet spacious, high performing yet low emitting, lightweight yet still reassuringly solid. It's a car that we are exceptionally proud of at Lotus and we truly believe that there is nothing else like it out there both in terms of styling and performance.

"Make no mistake, there's a definite market requirement for the Elite - it's the ultimate sports car feel with comfort and space. There will always be those who believe that Lotus should stick to small sports cars but we didn't take the decision to design something like the Elite lightly, it's based on months of careful research and planning. It's worth noting this sector has been very successful for us in the past and now the Elite raises the benchmark higher still."

Set for release in spring 2014, this is an innovative, exciting GT that will set a new benchmark in design, performance and emissions. And it's not all about sleek lines and stunning bodywork with this particular 2+2, what hides beneath this shark like exterior perfectly does the aesthetics justice. A front-mid positioned 5.0l V8 engine delivering up to 620 PS meaning drivers can expect to go from 0-100 km/h in approximately 3.5 to 3.7 seconds.

Lotus with 600HP which is not an F1 car!!!!Wow. Hope it won't end with concept. The design is quite interesting. Reminds a bit Maserati Granturismo and Ferrari California. Anyway GT cars have a similar design. Well done Lotus.

Beyond beautiful ... this is pure automotive art, it raises the bar of supercar design to a new level IMHO ... but as the ultimate Lotus model it should be wearing the tag Esprit rather than Elite.

5.0 Litre V8 in a Lotus...oh dear. 1,650kg...all that pork will affect its handling. Please don't kill the Elise! And yes...it looks like a Renault Laguna Coupe.

1650kg won't affect handling with over 600hp. Ferrari 599 GTB weights also over 1600 kg and it isn't slow and handles rather well.

any additional weight will effect handling. Period.

Wonder where they sourced the V8. Possibly related to the 5.0 V8 in the Lexus IS F? It does seem logical given the renewed agreement between the two companies for powertrain use.

I loved it with just a glance at the thumbnail. Nothing that is very special, but I have to admit that it's attractive. This is gonna be a good car I can tell.

2014? While the Elite looks extremely good now, it might be dated at that time. I like the peformance + emissions figures.

Beautiful styling. But at the same time this is very contradictory for me. A hard top AND an automatic!? Too far from what Lotus stands for in my opinion. They need to change a few of those to maintain their image. However, I'm sure it will do well, and expand the company into another segment of the market.

Lotus is trying to expand their market. As it stands, only midgets can get into the current cars.

I'm a Lotus fan and this is indeed a good car, but, isn't 1600kg a bit un-lotus ?? I mean no matter how good this car is, it has left the whole Lotus concept behind, which is being very simple and light, and that's why I love the brand. This is a good car and I want to see it in real life. So, hopefully if it really made it's way to production I hope Lotus would shave off at least 200kg off it cz in the end this is still a Lotus !!!!

3700lbs will limit its handling traits, but it can still be a great rewarding and worthwhile project. I love the M5 and its pretty heavy, It just needs to have fun dynamics like the bimmer. Btw, it looks like an $30k car, it should have V6 and be sold in Toyota dealer ships competing vs. the Genesis, then again so do many expensive cars.
