Prius Plug-in Hybrid could cost as little as $25,800

Toyota has announced plans to introduce six new hybrids by the end of 2012.

While details are limited, three of the models will be available only as a hybrid. The other three will be hybrid versions of models currently available with petrol engines.

Takeshi Uchiyamada, Toyota's executive vice president, also revealed the Prius Plug-in Hybrid will cost $3,000 to $5,000 more than the standard Prius. While isn't chump change, a base price of $25,800 to $27,800 would vastly undercut the $41,000 Chevy Volt. A U.S. launch is schedule for mid-2012 and sales are expected to total 20,000 units annually.

As for the often talked about RAV4 EV, co-developed with Tesla Motors, Uchiyamada said work has already begun at the company's technical center in Michigan. It will be introduced at the 2010 Los Angeles Auto Show and go on sale in 2012.

I'm so glad that Toyota is saving the earth through using enormous amounts of unnecessary copper and several other materials that are toxic to mine and refine. Copper mining is one of the more destructive activities that man has done to the earth. I've worked on these superfund sites. There is just about every heavy metal pollutant that most people have heard of left behind from these ventures. What goes into producing the batteries is arguably worse. The little power that these things make during deceleration just isn't going to pay back their eco-toll.

Hybrid is the future I found this from Toyota. Toyota is celebrating another milestone for Prius, with worldwide sales passing two million since the original hybrid was launched in 1997. Across three generations, approximately 2,012,000 units have been sold in more than 70 countries and regions, up to the end of September this year. UK sales during the same period were 38,600. Based on these volumes, Toyota calculates Prius has saved around 11 million tonnes of CO2 emissions compared to petrol models of similar size and power, an achievement supported by its continuing development of its full hybrid technology to achieve even cleaner and more fuel efficient performance. Today?s Prius emits just 89g/km of CO2 ? the lowest figure achieved by any current production car with an internal combustion engine ? and has an official combined cycle fuel consumption figure of 74.3mpg. Hybrid power is a central element in Toyota?s development of more environmentally efficient vehicles and Prius continues to provide an excellent platform in which to demonstrate its flexibility and real-world benefits. Supported by Prius?s global achievements, Toyota aims to sell at least one million hybrid vehicles annually as early as possible in the 2010s.
