Hitting the streets of Munich next year

Audi has teamed up with E.ON, Stadtwerke München and the Technical University of Munich to begin testing a fleet of twenty A1 e-Trons starting next year.

As part of the agreement, E.ON and Stadtwerke München (both utility companies) will install 100 electric filling stations across Munich.  The Technical University of Munich will be "...responsible for comprehensive data collection and evaluation of mobility behavior." To do this, they have developed a mobile phone app that will document the behavior of all participants in the program.

According to Rupert Stadler, Chairman of the Board of Management at Audi, "Electromobility means more to us than just electrifying conventional cars. Instead we are dedicated to a holistic approach to all aspects of the topic. We hope that this fleet trial will enable us to gain broad insights into the behavior but also the expectations of our customers regarding their dealings with electric cars."

As you may recall, the A1 e-Tron is a range extended plug-in hybrid like the Chevrolet Volt. It features a 75 kW (102 PS / 101 hp) electric motor which enables to the car to travel up to 50 kilometers (31 miles) on electricity alone. When the lithium-ion batteries are depleted, a compact internal combustion engine recharges them. This allows the car to travel an additional 200 kilometers (124 miles). While official efficiency data hasn't been determined, Audi expects a fuel consumption rating of 1.9 l/100 km (123.80 mpg) and CO2 emissions of 45 g/km (72 g/mile).

The only vehicle with "Tron" on it that I'm interested in is a Light Bike. This will be very expensive if/when it goes on sale.

I thought the A1 would be a flop; how wrong I was! Audi dealers across the UK are currently struggling to meet demand for the A1! Audi's very own Fiat 500 with bags of attitude! Another winner except the price. Imagine the S1 performance potential!

I read a review that said it actually doesn't have any attitude. It's cynically designed and feels that way too, delivering low on fun compared to a Citro?n DS3 or its most obvious home-grown rival. No, the reason this sells is because it's more stylish than a "MINI" (although the BMW is more efficient) and because it has Audi written on it. Hopefully the S1 will bring the fun, though. It depends how fun the Polo GTI is.

Hopefully they keep the Wankel engine in this car. Even though I am not the biggest fan of rotary engines, I think the application here is particularly clever. Use a rotary engine for a range extension unit that is both extremely lightweight and very smoothe-running. Perfect.

Audi keeps on releasing hits after hits. I'm a big fan. For us Americans, it might sell well to high middle-class hipsters, but it's really in Europe, South America and Asia that this car will be a serious hit, as more of the class that can afford $40,000 cars usually drive small vehicles anyways. That and the fact that gas in those countries are like $12/gallon, when we pay about $3. Very well executed package, should definitely take a bite out of Mercedes with the Smart and BMW with the Mini.
