Ah, I can see the glare of money in their eyes by offering this useless bullshit to the fanatic Mini fans. What's the point in this? I understand buying a Ferrari or a Aston Martin (pointless cars but still worth having) but not this, this isn't even worth it.
Hate replies are imminent.

They are jeopardizing the Mini brand, making it undistinguishable.

An enthusiast always hates change. Economic realities and the hunger for change by the buying public make these companies develop different variants. If the manufacturers had a long line of customers satisfied with the original, they would stay the course.
Think of all of the trends in the industry in the last cuple of decades...wagons were replaced by minivans, relaced by SUV's, then Cuv's, then hybrids...who knows what'll be next.

er.... time to unveil the Mini 18 wheeler, garbage truck, and school bus!

Don't forget the 6-wheeled premium executive City-SUV with an AWD 250bhp Cooper S Works Cabriolet version. It'll be called the Mini Madman.

They're only considering it? Well I hope one of the decision-makers reads WCF, so that it means something when I say DON'T DO IT BMW!! I can't even bring myself to call you Mini anymore! You're just a sub-division of BMW that makes expensive, stylish cars.
I know you enjoy playing silly buggers with niche cars BMW, but stop tarnishing a beloved British name already!

Oh boy, here we go... Isn't the NAME MINI don't mean anything? BMW, have you read the dictionary? n., pl., min?i.
-Something that is distinctively smaller than other members of its type or class.
-A miniskirt.
If your not planing in getting into fashion design with a briton-bavarian miniskirt for the pretty lady, STICK TO THE DEFINITION!
The only thing that make sense is the Minissimo, due that it is more in line with the REAL definition of MINI.
(definition thanks to http://www.answers.com/topic/mini)

WHO IS IN CHARGE OF THESE COMPANIES?
Marketing nerds who will push anything and everything to get ahead is my guess.
I could only imagine how good the industry would be if people who actually liked cars were in charge!

Who? At BMW I think it is a bunch of people who know what their customers want! BMW seems rather good at making money. Even during the economic down turn the world has been thru and is still going thru in many places BMW, VW group and a few others are facing the challenge rather than running from it with tails between legs. Agree with everyone who has posted so far. I'd much rather see a real proper small Mini in the same vein as the Spiritual concept of many years ago than a 2 door off roader.
Suzuki X90 anyone?

Funny how none of you remember that new generation of MINI is just getting started, when you look at the Mini brand of years past, they had the coupe, the pickup truck, the panel van, the mooke... I myself would love to see a 2 door Crossover. Shame shame on not knowing the history...

All based on the original Issigonis model which was no bigger than it needed to be and, arguably, gave us the supermini sector that dominates the European car industry.
The current MINI didn't deserve comparison from the very first models in 2002. As we read about SUVs it drifts even further away from the original, in terms of meeting a brief of purity and in setting the agenda as opposed to following it.

The thing is that the Mini became many different things - a rally car, an off-roader (Moke), cheap basic transport for the masses, a utility vehicle (van, pickup), a movie star, a style icon, and so on - and BMW are focused on the wrong things.
Is theirs a cheap, basic, utilitarian vehicle for the masses? No. Not by a long shot. Is it a fashion item that has appeared in movies? Yes. That's clearly the Mini they're interested in. Besides, when was there ever a 2dr SUV or a Coup? version of the original (the Moke doesn't count, because that had no doors)? They're just making what they can get away with selling, which, with a badge combo like that, equates to just about anything.
It may resemble a Mini, but if cars could talk, the Issigonis original would say "You're no son of mine. And stop humping that BMW X6. You'll end up with all kinds of niche-car rubbish if you keep doing that...".

they had been toying around the Beachcomber concept from the Mini Moke. I don't see why not.

awhk.... time to unveil the Mini 18 wheeler, garbage truck, and school bus! Very good!! too many mini models... none of which are small or affordable... exactly the opposite of the concept of the original and the only mini.
September 3, 2010 2:29 am
Thats not Mini, its MINI.
Mini is the orginal, MINI is the BMW.... please learn the difference!
September 3, 2010 3:50 am
There is barely a difference. One is just more stupid than the other. Besides, BMW had no reason to capitalise it. MINI isn't an acronym.
September 4, 2010 8:55 am
Porsche does it for fun so, why not BMW for MINI? Besides, the Countryman is gonna be a sure-fire hit like forthcoming coupe and roadster!
