VW Phaeton to return to U.S. market

VW Phaeton to return to U.S. market
2011 Volkswagen Phaeton Facelift

Despite previous abyssmal sales of the saloon in North America, VW plans to bring the Volkswagen Phaeton back to the United States.  Only 2,253 units of the luxury level car sold in the States from 2004-2006, leading to Volkswagen's failed annual sales target of 20,000 units globally.

Selling $85,000 cars to Americans may encounter strong resistance as the original U.S. offering substantially depreciated.  Used models typically range in price from $25,000 to $35,000.

Still, it is Volkswagen's goal to triple their share in the United States by 2018.  "We have our eyes firmly set on the U.S. market," said VW Dresden factory director Juergen Borrman in an interview with Bloomberg.  Borrman, who oversees assembly of the Phaeton, said the U.S.-spec Phaeton will get a complete overhaul.

A facelifted version of the car is already on sale in parts of Europe.  Changes include a higher quality interior, and a renewed front and rear.  The U.S. car could also get new engine choices, as it will coincide with the launch of the second generation of the car.

The current Phaeton has been on sale since 2002.  It is currently sold with four petrol engine choices, including two versions of the 6.0-liter W12, and two diesel models.  The car's horsepower output ranges from 221 to 444 hp (165 to 331 kW).

The question still remains, if the Phaeton sold so poorly in the U.S. before the economic crash, why try again now?

This is just my opinion but strong Audi sales (especially A8) will make this car almost impossible to sell it in US. VW please don't make the same mistake twice.

@ ussoleg...it is a GLOBAL mistake..That's why this car is such a great second hand car. To buy it new is crazy when you look at what's available from the VW Group's stable like the Audi.

VW thinks the competition is with their own Audi A8 or BMW 7, Mercedes S, and/or Infiniti Q, Lexus LS; but the truth is that with brand perception their real competition is the Hyundai Equus.

jf90: you are correct - you have to buy them used however, used cars come from new cars and I think VW will have a hard time selling this model at $85k + state tax. Most people who purchased this model back in 2004-06 actualy leased it. Maybe it they offer some crazy lease deal on Phaeton it will sell.

True. Most dealers run them as demos for directors/sales managers, before selling them

Everything looks good. The problem is the badge. Slap on an Audi/BMW/MB badge, and this will sell like hotcakes.

If they want to market this car as a ultra-luxury saloon, the first thing they have to do is get rid of that front overhang. Looks ghastly like a FWD car despite the fact that all of them are in fact AWD. Then they could always follow Korea's example, and sell this car with different badges as is done on the Genesis and Equus. Then maybe they'll have a shot at success. But I will never understand why they bothered making a car that would potentially steal sales from their flagship A8.

I'd rather get a 7-Series and have the Rolls Ghost platform then, which may even save me pocket change. The Phaeton is a ridiculous joke for it's price.
