Porsche 918 Spyder Hybrid drives - first real video

This past Thursday, the Porsche 918 Spyder Hybrid made its driving debut on a closed road in Monterey California, just days prior to its appearance at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance.

After being shipped over from Germany by plane, engineers handed the keys of the new 918 Spyder Hybrid to Porsche AG Design Chief Michael Mauer. The car drove under its own power which comes from the mid mounted 3.4 liter V8 out of the RS Spyder as well as in all electric mode which powers just the front wheels.

The 918 Spyder prototype combines high-tech racing features and electro-mobility to offer a fascinating range of qualities: An emission level of just 70 grams CO2 per kilometre on fuel consumption of three litres/100 kilometres (equal to 94 mpg imp) truly outstanding even for an ultra-compact city car, on the one hand, combined with the performance of a super sports car and acceleration from a standstill to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just under 3.2 seconds, top speed of 320 km/h (198 mph) plus, and a lap time on the Nordschleife of Nürburgring in less than 7:30 minutes, faster than even the Porsche Carrera GT, on the other.

does anyone know how this car is supposed to reach 94 mpg?? sure, it s got an electro motor, but a prius got one too. and even this car with its tiny 4cyl engine and super ugly aerodynamics doesnt make 94 mpg...

I find this video very inspiring. What a beautiful car, but I also applaud Michael Mauer and his choice of words. He states this car was created in part due to the "Environmental discussion". He did not say that it was made to stop "Global warming". I have the feeling he has the common sense to know that whatever automobile he makes will not make a change in the global climate be it hybrid or not. He is simply doing his job to develop a better image to the vast majority who believe in all the climate change hype.

Great evolution of the Carrera GT. Great looks and a much more powerful engine. This is a great step forward for Porsche.

So it does work. He says this is the future of Porsche, I think this is the future of supercars. For now, at least. If it's as good to drive as they say it is, which it probably will be (it's a Porsche after all), then Porsche is ahead all of the other brands by miles. They need to develop this technology to be cheap to produce and put it in all of their cars.

stunning rolling sculpture. to be sure. but at the asking price not for me. rather have a nice piece of realestate thats paid for than this. but I would buy a poster of it though, thats the reality of this car.

I'm confused. Has this thing done a lap of the 'Ring? If so, surely THAT was its driving debut. If not, that why are we quoting what it can do?

I think the 'Ring time was gained by putting parameters into a simulator that accurately recreates its characteristics (like Gran Turismo). If so, it's really a theoretical time. In perfect driving conditions, it could post a 7:20. I might be wrong though.

Stunning... The design is a throwback to the past...but the technology is what will be the future for the breed. We need to thank all the Cayenne owners for funding this project.

What a beautiful machine and to anyone says it looks lke any other supercar, this car looks like a Le Mans racer back in the 70's, which creates inspiration to many supercar designers

I get it. 3.7 liter V8? thats tiny, but I bet its high revving. With porsches engineering thatll take care of the horsepower all the way. Then just add batteries to more then make up for the torque. Thats a killer combo in itself! They got a fresh design too. = Real Supercar

the headlights are supposed to be a modern version of the Porsche 904's headlights : http://www.ultimatecarpage.com/images/large/640/Porsche-904-GTS_1.jpg

If anything the rear lights resemble those of the Audi R8. An Aston's are in that squashed-bracket shape.

The 918 Spyder looks great, it really does. The design reminds the original 550 Spyder. But I think many of us would like to see it driving with the electric motors.
