BMW X1 overtakes Audi Q5 for top-selling premium SUV
2010 BMW X1, 13.08.2010

By a margin of just 407 vehicles, the BMW X1 barely beat out the Audi Q5 to be Europe's highest-selling premium SUV for the first six months of 2010.  BMW sold 44,067 units of the X1 from January to June, compared to 43,660 units of the Q5.

The Volvo XC60 (29,616 units), Land Rover Freelander (20,138 units) and the BMW X5 (16,565) rounded out the five top selling SUVs in Europe for the time period.  JATO Dynamics, a research firm in the UK, compiled the statistics, which were published in the Automotive News.

Sales of the X1 have certainly not slowed down.  The company claims to have sold 11,483 units in July alone.  One advantage is the vehicle's €27,200 pricetag, at least €9,000 less than the other models in the top five.

However, the list could get a shakeup once 2011 model year vehicles go on sale.  This could include X1 competitors from Infiniti and Mercedes-Benz, along with the Audi Q3 and Saab 9-4X.  The MINI Countryman could also pull away some buyers from the X1, even though it may not be considered a "premium SUV".

The Countryman will cost €7,000 less than the X1.

I was just thinking that. Judging by the other 4, it may be a case of money.

a lot of people with no clue here. The Q5 isn`t the direct competitor to the X1. Its direct competitor is the X3 and the Q5 sells much better than the X3. Audi will bring up the Q3 vs the X1 in about a year and then we talk again.

Well thanks for the brain wave, but it doesn't matter which is a rival to which. The point is that, of all the "Premium" SUVs, it is the littlest BMW X car that out-sells the rest. I personally find this a little odd.

odd? why is a 3-series outselling a 5-series or an a4 outselling an a6. it is the cheaper price of course. the cheaper a car is the more people can afford it and the X1 is the cheapest SUV of all premium carmakers at the moment. it would be odd if an X3 would outsell an X1. it is as difficult to understand as 1x1.

I'm sure Audi are consoling themselves by looking at their significantly fatter profit margins on the Q5 compared with what BMW will ever have with the X1.

It's true. I've been in Europe for the past 6 weeks these things are about as common as a Renault Clio. I've never seen a car sell as well.

People are waking up. They are moving back to the original German roots. When you say German, all u could ever say is BMW, Mercedes and Porsche because every one of them have their own personality. audi is just dead since the 1st world war. I can see them turning to ashes in 2015 as they will never top BMW as they claimed they will.

You just hate Audi too much to acknowledge the facts.

No way to challenge Bmw(Actually Bmw challenged Audi),I don't say they make the best cars but i'm saying if there is onething that Bmw can do it well, that's selling cars and making money

Just worried if the Q3 is going to be better looking than this ugly X1, which is not hard for them to achieve considering the poor effort put into the exteior of the X1, then X1 may lose its crown in this SUV spot.

@LWKH well if you've seen an X1 in real life u'll know that it look like a real German car with clean cut. It looks ugly in pictures, in real life it looks much much much better. Thats the problem with BMW designs, its that they have seriously tons of dimentions, in a way that makes them look diffirent from every angle.

@LWKH BMW's cars never sold because of their looks, BMWs sell alot because they are serious German machines. They look normal, but they are wolfs in sheeps clothing. So does Mercedes Benz. BMW and Mercedes Benz are like brothers, Mercedes pushes more gorgeous interiors, BMW pushes more dynamic capabilities. BMW and Mercedes Benz are serious machines, im a BMW guy and still i have space for Mercedes Benz. Never felt anything for any other cars though i'v drivvin one of the best audis the S6, and i can swear if my 320i had a V10 with fat tyres i'd destroy it.

@GENIE : No i think Audi can rather console themselves to being 2nd best yet again. Goes to show consumers prefer cars with substance rather than overpriced VW's.

I guess there are a lot of people with €27,200 and nothing better to do with it?!... thank goodness people in my country have discerning tastes, becuz the Q5 sells about 5:1 here, versus the X1. I never get tired of seeing a Q5, and the first time I saw a X1 I was like oouuu!!!... and by the second time, bleh!

X1 is new and cheaper and "By a margin of just 407 vehicles, the BMW X1 barely beat out the Audi Q5". A hollow victory.

Hey Beemer89. Dont know where ForceInduction got his facts. 3er has much better leg room than X1 (I have an X1). Boot in 3er also longer but X1 is higher (naturally). Don't know why the Audi guys get so touchy about BMW X1s outselling Q5s. Audi and BMW drivers are very different. Audis are on paper better value for money car for car. You get more performance on the smaller engined cars (AUDI A4 2.0 turbo vs BMW 320i etc) and bigger cars when you compare each competitor. BMW's for me just drive a lot better and the feel better when you drive them. They are also quite a bit more economical. I am sure there are certain Audis that drive well, but the majority of BMWs do it for me.

Audi Q5 2L quattro/manual is €7k cheaper in my country than BMW X1 AWD wit 2,5 l engine. Respectively over €32.000 and more than €39K for each with same level of equipment. It is not a price thing. It is how Audi looks rather. Both are ugly though.
