Spies out in the field have given us the first glimpse at the next generation 2012 Audi A6.  These early pics show a new set of headlights on the car that seem inspired by the A1.

A similarity in look to the A8 is not too surprising. The next A6 is expected to also adopt a variation of the mostly aluminum spaceframe from the A8 but with greater proportions of steel.  Despite the unibody structure's light weight, it is more rigid than similar steel varieties.

Early speculation suggests the availability of 2.8-liter V6 and 4.2-liter V8 petrol engines, as well as 2.7- and 3.0-liter V6 turbodiesels.  Output should range from a low 185 hp (138 kW) to 350 hp (261 kW) on the V8.  No word yet what will replace the 429-hp (320-kW) V10 engine currently found on the S6, but we would not be surprised to see a more fuel efficient twin-turbo V8.

Now that the 2012 Audi A6 has begun testing, look for its introduction to come in either spring or fall of 2011.

Well the A1, A3, A4, A5, A6 and A8 all have the same front end, with either one type of hatch/wagon rear or one type of sedan rear, and different lengths of roof in between. Then there's the Q5, which is just a small Q7, and the R8, which is just a glitzy TT. Yeah, Audis do all look the same.

congratulations lucifa you have just posted the dumbest comment on world car fans. "the R8 is just a glitzy gt", last time I checked audi didnt produce a TT with a 5.2 litre V10. man your moron, thats like saying all BMW's look the same because they have the kidney shaped grill. Go spew your garbage elsewear.

They do all look the same and whether you like it or not, it is not that remarkable. It is the type of design that puts you to sleep. If it was jus that A5 having this design, then it would be fine. But no, they like to cut costs and now we have a VW Passat that will look exactly like the other Audi's. Well, at least you will not mistake the fact that Audi's are in fact VW's under the skin. Also, although the R8 is better looking than the female TT, it is actually the worst looking car in its class - it resembles a rat! If BMW brings out the VED, the R8 is just going to be trashed.

Same A4 and A8 shared side line, Audi keeps the 80s MB-inspired Bruno-Sacco-planks, not much to tell about the rear since theres nothing to see yet, front gets much more slender head lights for even more aggressive look, fog lights still in development. But after all, its too early to declare this new A6 a lazy change

LUCIFA...get of the drugs! or replace your seeing eye dog. To quote you..."Then there's the Q5, which is just a small Q7, and the R8, which is just a glitzy TT" What world do you live on??? However, it is good to see that some people have real comments to make that are relevent and not blind dribble.

Please, don't screw it up!!! I already bored with new Audi's design trend. If they want to sell interesting cars they need to change their strategy, now! Moreover i have a feeling that the side windows line is exacly the same as in present model...

Sooner or later they'll have to get rid of this single frame chapter .. I would not be surprised to see this A6 showing a different front end.

They really need a new design direction, this is getting old now I was a supporter of this design language, but after the A8, meh

+1. Think about how different the current generation of the A6 was from the prior generation; the current E-class to the past one; while BMW has the same problem with repeating design language, the new 5-series is pretty, IMHO. I hope Audi snaps out of it.

What's up with moaning wannabe car designers who arguably demand that premium car brands have to continually create completely new designs a la the one great USA and the origami vehicles. Ever heard of huge depreciation of values which invariably follows a complete redesign of a vehicle model. ??

As someone who bought a 2009 Audi, I understand your point. However, that's part of the reason people "allow" for luxury model life cycles to last longer than the average car. In the last 30 years or so, premium car life cycles have become shorter (think 1980-1991 S-class compared to 1998-2004 S-class), but that doesn't mean they haven't "advanced" with every model change.

Sorry, 1998-2005 S-class
