Growth in sales at Jaguar Land Rover could spur development of a few new models, according to Tata Motors chairman Ratan N. Tata.  JLR, made up of two iconic British automakers, was purchased by Tata Motors in 2008 from Ford.

Amidst two straight quarters of profit, on the backs of new products at JLR, Tata is looking to keep the momentum moving.  This is especially true at Jaguar, where the executive expressed pleasure with the popularity of the Jaguar XF and XJ sedans.

"Jaguar cars are regaining the confidence of customers as being reliable, in addition to being high-performance, with great road-handling and occupant safety," Tata said in an annual report released last month.

"The Company is considering widening the product range of Jaguar cars by introducing a station wagon, a new entry-level Jaguar, and a new roadster," he continued.  The possibility exists that one, or more, of these models may be manufactured in China, and not the U.K.

For Tata, this may be the last major move he makes at JLR.  Tata has announced that he will retire in December 2012.

I don't think they do. I think they want to be the opposite of BMW - more exclusive and much truer to their roots. BMW has sold out with cars lke the X1, X3 and X6 in particular. Even the 3-series is more plentiful on the UK's roads than the Mondeo. They've crossed the line from exclusive and aspirational to becoming the automotive equivalent of Tesco Finest -- easy to access and slightly posher but still mainstream.

I think that Jaguar is trying to become the brand it once was. Just because they are making more cars it doesn't mean that they are selling out. And let's not forget how mainstream Audi and Benz have become... @Bristol: I see what your saying, but BMW at its best remains at the top when compared to the other two. The M3 and M5 are the kings of the hill of their generations, and the 7series is still as magnificent as it once was, only with better technology. The way I see it, BMW is the way it is so that it can have the money to play with crazy concepts and, hopefully, execute them.

Entry level model? I hope Ratan Tata thinks of a new X-Type and X-Type Estate, not a Megane or Golf competitor. Small roadster works, when it's going to be a Boxster competitor, full of style and powerful, but not manufactured in China.

Please don't get me started on the 7series, but Jaguar, unlike Volvo under Geely, know what they want and are not afraid to achieve it. This is a great move for Jaguar, a car firm vilified for its old-hat image for far too long, but are now so hip it's a shock to the system! Porsche and BMW should be worried.

Jaguar has its work cut out for it if it wants to displace BMW. BMW isn't going anywhere for the time being.

Sounds like Mr. Tata is thinking with his heart as well as his business mind. Hope this sort of thing doesn't end with his retirement. A sub ?40k roadster would be great. Heck, make a basic sub ?30k 2 seater and I'll get out my seldom used cheque book!
