Two different Ferrari 458 Challenge prototypes were spied for the first time during track testing earlier this week.  One of the prototypes was spotted on the Fiorano Circuit near Ferrari's Maranello, Italy, headquarters, wearing different front and rear bumpers than the 458 Italia.

Possibly for benchmarking puroses, we can see one prototype wearing the Challenge styled fascias in primer gray while the other prototype keeps the standard 458 bumper fascias.  The unfinished Challenge fascia is also wearing a bit of camouflage in the center setion of the bumper.  It also appears to carry different styling near the front wheels.  Hood pins were also installed on the test vehicles, which are riding on center-locking nine-spoke wheels.  The new rear bumper is relatively the same, saving for the dual exhaust pipes instead of three tailpipes on the 458 Italia.

A number of lightweight pieces were also installed, with changes to the seating and windows.  The test models are also using large brakes, a new roll cage, and a plastic driver's side window.

The Ferrari 458 Challenge will also use thinner body panels to bring weight well below the Italia's 1,380 kg (3,042 lbs).  It uses a 4.5-liter V8 engine that generates 562 hp (319 kW, 570 PS), and up to 540 Nm (398 ft-lb) of torque.  It will be mounted to a dual-clutch F1-style gearbox, with F1-Trac control, electronic differential, and a racing suspension also installed.

Great car 458 Italia, and Challenge or Scuderia version will has probably the same power as Italia but less weight, or maybe this is a GT2 racing prototype for racing use only. Anyway I'm waiting for Spider, it will be less stiff and slower but I hope it will looks gorgeous and Ferrari won't give it a metal roof, but classic soft top.

Just watched this car on the last Top Gear episode. This car is simply amazing and I feel bad for all the F430 owners. It really is a huge step forward.

I agree, technologically it is a huge step forward compared to the 430.However,in terms of physical appearance,a 430 owner would be reluctant to move up to this hideous model.I would rather own a 911 Turbo S than a 458.

I'm sorry but as good as the 458 is. I prefercthe f430 scuderia. I like the body style of the 458, just what puts me off is the headlights and centre exhaust. Plus even jeremy said in the to gear vid, about all the buttons on the steering wheel and how confusing it is. That's a little messed up for me.

if anything the 430 has a stupid grin on its face where the 458 with the wider sitting slit eyes seems alot more aggressive. and the centre mounted tri exhaust is awesome... see F40. one of the all time greats, and now we see it again on one of the future classics.

When I first saw the 458 it had me throwing questions about the design. Now it just seems like everything is just right.
