Enterprise Rent-A-Car will be offering the all-electric Nissan Leaf for rental at locations in eight U.S. cities starting next January

U.S. rental car company Enterprise Rent-A-Car will be buying 500 Nissan Leaf electric cars to use in their fleet nationwide.

The Leaf will be available for rental at Enterprise locations in eight cities starting next January. Enterprise will begin installing charging stations at 100 of its outlets in November.

The Nissan Leaf will go on sale in the United States next year, although Nissan has already begun taking orders, 17,000 by its own count, on the electric car and will start deliveries to those customers in December.

The Leaf has a base price of $32,780 but a $7,500 federal tax credit brings that down to $25,280 - which is what Enterprise will be paying for the cars.

The all-electric Leaf comes with an electric motor producing 80 kW (107 hp / 109 PS) and 280 Nm (206 lb-ft) of torque. The laminated lithium-ion batteries provide the car with a 100 mile/160 km range on a full charge.

This is a pretty interesting vehicle. You should read this blog on Car and Drivers website: http://www.autoweek.com/article/20100723/CARNEWS/100729951 Sounds like a pretty solid commuter car. Only issues he seems to have is that once or twice it got kind of sketchy on the way home when the charge started getting low. If you commute less than 40 miles per day this car would be great. If you on the other hand commute slighly further but still love the plug in convenience of these cars you may think about the Volt because of its extended range.

Your rhetorical question has lost it's humor somewhere within the last 100 posts you have made spewing hate toward GM and specifically the Volt. I'm not sure what happened between you and GM, but it needs to be put away in the past. I cannot understand somebody putting so much negative energy into something. Why don't people come onto this website with insightful positive things to say.

Its sad how far behind the Volt is, but GM set themselves up for this after killing the EV1. Nissan has a real game changer with the Leaf. There is a wave coming in, and it's electric.

well, i never seen GM ahead of the game anyway...no suprise. guess what, i'm sure when the Volt came out (if), it'll have lots of problems/ issue! up to NOW, GM still haven't have a pre-production vehicle for media take a test drive! i believe there are lots of problems/ issues need to be fix...

You know they will, I personally love my gasoline cars but with such a large group of people with a religious style agenda in the name of Global Warming these plug in electric vehicles might just be the wave of the future. You know all those fanatics are going to hunt down and burn all our fossil fueled cars in the near future, we will call it the Hippy Inquisition.
