Will be built in Zuffenhausen

Citing an overwhelming response, Porsche's Supervisory Board has green-lighted production of the 918 Spyder concept.

Originally shown at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show, the 918 featured a 368 kW (500 PS / 493 hp) V8 engine and three electric motors which produced 160 kW (218 PS / 215 hp). This gave the concept a combined output of 528 kW (718 PS / 708 hp) which allowed it to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.2 seconds, before hitting a top speed of 320 km/h (198 mph). More importantly, thanks to plug-in hybrid technology, the Spyder only consumed 3.0 liters/100 kilometers (94 mpg imp / 78 mpg US) while emitting 70 grams of CO2 per kilometer.

According to Michael Macht, President and Chairman of the Board of Management, "Production of the 918 Spyder in a limited series proves that we are taking the right approach with Porsche Intelligent Performance featuring the combination of supreme performance and efficient drivetrain concepts. We will develop the 918 Spyder in Weissach and assemble it in Zuffenhausen. This is also a very important commitment to Germany as a manufacturing base."

Pricing is expected to start at €500,000 ($649,835) and customers will, reportedly, be asked for a €38,470 ($50,000) non-refundable deposit.

Decision taken by the Porsche Supervisory Board

Green Light for Series Development of the 918 Spyder

Stuttgart. In its session today, the Supervisory Board of Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart, gave the green light for series development of the Porsche 918 Spyder. Reflecting the overwhelming response from the public and customers to the Concept Study, the Supervisory Board gave Porsche's Board of Management the mission to develop a production model based on the car already presented. This concept version of an ultra-high-performance mid-engined sports car with plug-in hybrid technology made its debut at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show and at Auto China in Bejing, hitting the headlines worldwide.

Michael Macht, President and Chairman of the Board of Management of Porsche AG: "Production of the 918 Spyder in a limited series proves that we are taking the right approach with Porsche Intelligent Performance featuring the combination of supreme performance and efficient drivetrain concepts. We will develop the 918 Spyder in Weissach and assemble it in Zuffenhausen. This is also a very important commitment to Germany as a manufacturing base."

The Concept Study of the 918 Spyder allows CO2 emissions of just 70 g/km, corresponding to fuel consumption of 3.0 litre/100 km (94.1 mpg imp) in the NEDC, on the one hand, and the performance of a super-sports car, on the other. This extremely efficient drivetrain technology then forms a symbiosis in the 918 Spyder with truly outstanding design and high-tech motorsport achievements. Further product details of the 918 Spyder will be disclosed in the months to come.

718 horsepower and 94mpg are two very good reasons to get hyped over this car. It's having your cake and eating it.

I just hope they put on some better looking rims, the concept wheels were too sci-fi for me.

The new car will look almost completely different, it will only have the same general shape. The wheels are just typical concept car wheels, nothin permanent.

the wheel covers are meant to reduce drag and improve fuel economy , you can remove them , they are just some plastic covers.

Half a million euro??? That's a lot. I wonder if it will be as good as Carrera GT and how it works with an electric power? Can't wait.

How do you know it's better??? In case of 911 some say that the old Porsche models are better like 993 Turbo than 997 Turbo despite it's more powerful and faster. We will see is it better or not, by watching, reading the reviews or asking the people who drove CGT and will drive 918 Spyder.

I can't wait to drive one... on a video game. Seriously though, I love that this car will exist. It's numbers were proven on simulators, now Porsche will prove them in reality!
