More features than you can shake a stick at

Hyundai has released the final specifications for the 2011 Equus.

The entry-level Equus Signature comes with leather upholstery, an Alcantara headliner, a massaging driver seat, heated and cooled front seats, a heated steering wheel, wood trim, a glass sunroof, power reclining and heated rear seats, and power rear sunshades.

The range topping Equus Ultimate adds individual rear seats, a rear passenger-side seat massage system, cooled rear seats, a rear-seat entertainment system (with an eight-inch monitor), a rear center console refrigerator, and a power trunk lid.

Both cars feature Smart Cruise Control, passive entry, GPS navigation, a 608-watt Lexicon 7.1 Discrete surround-sound audio system, XM Satellite Radio, iPod/USB/Bluetooth connectivity, and an Apple iPad which doubles as an owner's manual.

Under the hood, power is provided by a 4.6-liter V8 with 385 hp (287 kW / 390 PS) and 333 lb-ft (451 Nm) of torque. Connected to a six-speed ZF automatic transmission, the engine enables the Equus to accelerate from 0-60 mph in less than 6.4 seconds.

According to John Krafcik, Hyundai's America president and CEO, "When you're spending this much for a new car, you don't want to feel like you've been shortchanged on engineering, technology or features. Equus Signature has the technology and content of fully-optioned flagship models from Lexus and BMW, while Equus Ultimate delivers a specification approached only by our competitors' low-volume, special-order models."

Pricing information wasn't released, but potential customers can test drive the Equus with the "Your Time, Your Place" at-home vehicle demonstration program. If they decided to purchase the car, they'll be treated to the "Valet Service program" which provides at-home pickup for service and maintenance.

FIRSTS FOR HYUNDAI AND CONSUMERS

As Hyundai’s flagship rear-wheel-drive sedan, Equus contains many Hyundai firsts. One innovative new technology is the Vehicle Stability Management (VSM) system, which governs ESC, the electronic parking brake, smart cruise control, the collision warning sensor and the seatbelt tensioning system for optimal safety. The seatbelt tensioning system works through sensors, which detect critical driving situations and retract the seatbelts accordingly to prevent passenger movement. The Equus’ dynamic safety package is further enhanced by the Lane Departure Warning System and driver’s knee airbags.

Beyond safety, the Equus will also debut power rear side-window sunshades, a heated steering wheel, power trunk lid, dual power, heated and cooled front seats, rain-repelling front side windows, a thermoelectric rear console refrigerator, 60/40 split power reclining rear seats and electronically-controlled Air Suspension with dual-mode Continuous Damping Control.

Several new driver information technologies make their debut on the Equus. Driver and passengers can keep an eye on the Equus’ numerous electronic systems through the 3.5-inch TFT LCD vehicle information monitor. Equus also features a forward-view cornering camera and a parking guide system with both top view and rear view perspectives.

EQUUS ULTIMATE ADDS ULTRA LUXURY FEATURES

Equus Ultimate adds or replaces:

  • 50/50 split rear seats (four-passenger seating) with reclining function

  • First-class passenger-side rear seat: leg support and massage system

  • Cooled rear seats

  • Rear-seat entertainment system w/ eight-inch monitor

  • Thermoelectric rear center console refrigerator

  • Rear-seat power up/down head restraints w/ manual tilt

  • Rear-seat illuminated vanity mirrors

  • Forward-view cornering camera

  • Power trunk lid

The Equus Ultimate takes the luxury mandate of the Equus Signature and enhances it with a package of high-end amenities new to this price class. In the rear, the power-adjustable right-side seat provides passengers a generous 84 degrees of leg support, with the capability to move the front passenger seat forward and out of the way for full leg extension.

The Equus Ultimate replaces the 60:40 rear seat of the Equus Signature with a 50:50 power reclining seating configuration.

The seat-back of this 50:50 seat massages and vibrates with heat -- the perfect relaxation therapy for extended cruising. It is operated by its own remote control unit.

Ample, first-class-style headrests also contain wings that can be adjusted for perfect comfort and support, ideal for napping or mere relaxation.

The rear seat experience in the Equus Ultimate is further upgraded by an eight-inch LCD screen.

This individual entertainment system will play DVDs for rear-seat passengers, as well as demonstrate audio features and report on HVAC status. The rear multimedia monitor can be controlled from the rear console, which also houses the remote control seat massage function.

These controls also activate the heated and cooled rear seats and the rear console refrigerator.

Other Equus Ultimate features include rear-seat power up/down head restraints with manual tilt, rear-seat illuminated vanity mirrors, a forward-view cornering camera to help drivers navigate around tight corners and a power trunk lid.

THE HEART OF HYUNDAI’S FLAGSHIP – SOPHISTICATED POWERTRAIN AND CHASSIS TECHNOLOGIES

The Equus is powered by Hyundai’s two-consecutive-year award-winning 4.6-Liter DOHC Tau V8 engine, mated to a ZF® six-speed automatic transmission with SHIFTRONIC®. The overall driving experience is enhanced by Electro-Hydraulic Power Steering (EHPS) and an electronically-controlled Air Suspension with Continuous Damping Control (CDC) and Smart Cruise Control. Stopping power is provided by four-wheel disc brakes with Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) and EBD. The Equus rides on 19-inch chrome alloy wheels with P245/45R19 (front) / P275/40R19 (rear) tires.

STANDARD SAFETY EQUIPMENT

Equus features standard ESC with TCS and Brake Assist. A new Hyundai safety innovation comes in the form of the Vehicle Stability Management (VSM) with pre-collision warning. VSM ties all of the active and passive safety features together, making sure that they perform optimally and in conjunction with one another.

Other safety features include a total of nine standard airbags (advanced dual front airbags, front and rear seat-mounted side-impact airbags, driver knee airbag, and roof-mounted side-curtain airbags), electronic active front head restraints with power controls, electronic seatbelt pretensioners and a Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS). In addition to these, a Lane Departure Warning System (LDWS) makes its Hyundai debut on the Equus.

COLORS

Equus offers four exterior color choices and three interior theme choices. Exterior colors are White Satin Pearl, Black Noir Pearl, Granite Gray and Platinum Metallic. Interior themes are Cashmere with genuine Birch Burl wood, Jet Black with genuine walnut wood and Saddle with genuine walnut wood

Quality means something too, not just features. At the end of the day its just a Hyundai. Say Hyundai, then say Mercedes-Benz outloud. Which sounds better? Until that changes nothing is going to change in the luxury auto game...

How would that ever change if u don't give them a break? with Hyundai u get what you pay for , u don't pay extra for the badge, u get a stylish car with lots of standard equipment and less quality than a badged car like a Mercedes for half the price. I think that a Hyundai is a very good deal. The Equus for example u get an s-class looks with s-class equipment and a very powerful engine and a bit less quality for half the price , i call it a great deal . I'd get this over an E-class

I agree Turbo92, and Som3aa, you dont get a stylish car, you get a car styled like a Mercedes/Lexus... but that cost more (E class is US$48,000) no thanks.

There is a reason the badge is so prestigious, because they have always made amazing cars.

How idiotic of you to assume that just because it's a Hyundai it's built with poor quality. Hyundai has been making some of the highest quality, most reliable cars today. Once people like you stop being so ignorant can good cars like this succeed.

This is a great deal. The Germans fear Hyundai the most. Cars are so expensive with terrible depreciation. It is nice to have a great deal and all the goodies.

I just saw one of these here in Southern California at a cars and coffee gathering. The car looked fantastic and the build quality and interior is right in line with Euro cars. One thing I did note was a bad brake squeal but I'd love somebody to show me an AMG who's brakes don't squeal, but then again the AMG has the excuse of high friction compound "racing" pads.

If you option up an E-class or 5-series to the specs that this car will come standard with, they become a lot more expensive (close to 70k) plus you can't even get the cool back seats. And let's be honest here, none of us really need the performance potential of M5 or even just 3-series. I have a 06 range rover now and just sold my S2000, and I can't tell which handles better.

I remember the beginnings of Lexus in 1989 and 1990.. People made fun of it (as some of you guys are having fun NOW at this). But 15 years later, and Lexus is #1 best-selling luxury brand in the US. Each type of cars is able to be replaced with new players.

No Lexus will be #3 to MB and BMW this year. And worldwide they are tidbits anyway. Ofcourse you sell more when you cost less then a MB, but oh wait, they arent selling more! Sad..

Of all the luxury marques, I think it is Lexus that has the most to worry about with Hyundai. Hyundai nicked last-generation Lexus design, and can probably waft in the same manner while selling for less.

This is huge step up for Hyundai, but I seriously doubt any luxury brand has the least bit to worry about. Not yet at least.

This car would look a million times better with a badge in the middle of the grill instead of that split. Hyundai needs a new logo too

He who laughs last, laughs best is the theme with Orientals and Koreans. However, Hyundai definitely need a new corporate face to go with their upmarket strategy!

Y'all should just shut up and wait till Equus arrives stateside, take a test drive and then pass judgment. I just returned from a business trip to Korea and had the opportunity to ride it for 3 days as one (with a driver)was provided by my local business associate. This is a serious car that will make existing luxury brands shake in their boots.

Ah...where did you stay? It's the worst time of the year to come to Korea. Hot, humid, and rainy... The Equus is a nice passenger car...it should do well with the limo business back in the states...much better than the Towncars that usually pick me up.

It's a nice car, with all these options and a price of $60k it's good though, but i still prefer the LS460 on it, it has better interior design

This car is going to suck sales away from Lexus the most. They would be in the exact same pricing league for prices vs the size, features, and extras of the car. I don't think that it will take much from the Germans, simply because no one will ever react the same way when you say "I drive an Equus" as they will to "I drive a Mercedes-Benz." Also I agree with that there is a difference of Hyundai/Lexus leather vs Mercedes/Audi leather. And my family has owned all four brands thank you every much, even with MB text which our E-class has is of much higher quality then the Lexus's hard simply gross to sit in leather (there is a reason its for sale, not to mention the cheap tacky plastic in all of them vs the soft touch plastics in the Germans). And on top of it I doubt brand loyalist will shift brands, no matter if there is to be a better deal people will always buy what they know.

I'm not sure what your trying to get at. They stopped production of the Town Car in 2002. Then you say "or whatever its US rival is". If you do not know what your talking about, then you have contributed nothing to this thread. You are entitled to your own opinion but at least be specific when doing so. Your non sequitur rant should at least state either 1: You hate Towncars, or 2: You hate the U.S. Or both I don't care.
