Mazda to launch CX-5 small SUV based on 2008 Kazamai concept
Mazda Kazamai Concept

When Mazda introduced the Kazamai concept at the Moscow Motor Show in 2008, it received generally positive comments from WCF readers.  One reader in particular, DeRay, said, "Mazda has some great concepts I'm just tired of seeing concepts I want to see the real thing or something that is very very VERY close."

DeRay may get his wish.  When the Japanese automaker launches the small Mazda CX-5 SUV, it will be based on the two-year-old Kazamai concept, according to Autocar.  Unspecified sources at Mazda allegedly told Autocar that the new crossover will hit the market by the end of 2011.

Looking to keep fuel efficiency at a maximum, and weight at a minimum, the vehicle will use a new set of Sky generation direct-injection engines and a light transmission.  The vehicle is also expected to get regenerative braking and start/stop.

As soon as we get more info about the Mazda CX-5, we will bring it to you.  We hope, for DeRay's sake, that it has a strong resemblance to the Kazamai.

Unless there is some sort of structural bracing that is hidden by the black glass there is no way this car can make it into production looking like this. NHTSA will never let it pass side impact protection, or rollover.

The structure is visible in this picture: http://media2.worldcarfans.com/2008/8/large/3080826.002_1031super2.jpg

Ah yes, I need to zoom in on the pics, using IPhone so images are very small.

It's a nice thought, but it will probably look seriously watered-down in production spec.

Ah the mighty NHTSA, the only safety body on the planet that tests cars with crash test dummies Not wearing seatbelts. You are insulting Mazda's design engineers by downplaying the structural integrity of the monocoque. I for one hope it looks a lot like this on release day, i hope other manufacturers follow suit with more daring designs too.

Not everybody wears safety belts 100% of the time. How can making a safety test harder to pass get construed into something negative? If it's easier to fail only the best will pass. The end result will be the better for everyone. Also I couldn't see the structure, a lot of times, especially on concept cars the look is purely cosmetic. I applaud Mazda for adding function to the form.

Not wearing a seatbelt is sheer madness... the number of lives it has saved. I don't know car companies should have to compensate for people deliberately not using the safety kit they have provided.

I don't think what these concepts deserve is the production of something like the mazda 3. Come on mazda, try and make them real!

I am not too sure about the aesthetic design about the car. I, however, recommend Mazda to bring the CX-5 asap as I am ready to jump in the next generation Japanese cars. Nissan will be offering the Juke with a 1.6T and a vectoring 4wd system. I hope Mazda can trump it with a diesel engine. Otherwise, I really don't see any Mazda in my portfolio anymore. I am a Mazda3 owner, and it is the only car that is performing well for the general public use. As far a a good 4wd car, CX-7 is really so so with really low mpg. And as far as sport car goes, well there is no RX-7, but Toyota sure has the FT-86 coming. Bummer, the Zoom Zoom Zoom is changing side!

I like this design! But I doubt that Mazda will make it. If they do go into production who are they competing with? They have the CX-7 which was aimed at the Nissan Murano, then later targeted Honda's CR-V and Toyota's Rav4. What! So if this CX-5 is small They would have to bump the CX-7 back up to compete with the Murano. I don't know where Mazda is going right now.
