The United States market may have a new leader in luxury auto sales by the end of the year.  Though Toyota high end division Lexus has headed up the list for ten years, the position may be overtaken by Mercedes-Benz, according to Automotive News.

Lexus sales for the first six months of the year have totalled 107,430, an increase of 19 percent.  However, Mercedes-Benz sales, not including the commercial Sprinter van, have spiked by 25 percent to 106,972.

Toyota has recalled over eight million vehicles related to sudden acceleration, faulty floor mats, problematic brakes, fuel leaks, stalling engines, rollover risks and issues with steering.  The company is listed as a defendant in hundreds of lawsuits, and has been the subject of at least two subpoenas by federal grand juries.

"It will be a battle," Toyota U.S. sales chief Jim Lentz, told Automotive News. "The Lexus customer is really discerning about quality issues."

The full fallout from the recalls and safety concern could result in a decline in Lexus market share to 1.98 percent, which would put it below not only Mercedes but also BMW.  Through June, BMW has sold 100,632 vehicles.

I have to say I'm not surprized, I think Mercedes' product lineup is finally becoming much stronger after a slow recovery from the late 90's

the build quality is definitely back, they're cars are built unlike any others in their class and the objective quality rankings are bearing that out.

It's good to see Mercedes returning to form. They are back to turning out some great cars.

Why can't car companies drive their pre-released vehicles a million miles to sort out all the bugs and reliability issues. If Bimmers/MB does that, then there is really nothing else that will hold them back. Of course, that's not necessarily cost effective because the service depts usually generate the highest revenue for the dealers. Having cars that are too reliable would make the svc depts upset. At the same time, the typical Bimmer/MB buyers are more willing fork over extra cash for service.

they already do. mercedes tests their cars more rigorously than any other automaker on earth and spends the most of any automaker on research and development.

Now that MB has gotten rid of its retarded cousin (Chrysler) the build quality and design philosophy is slowly coming back. But MB and BMW have a looong way to go as far as service quality.

The lineup of Lexus is a bit old, it will catch up after launching of the new GS,IS and LS.

major players are releasing really good cars..going to be tough for the others to catch up..the critical element of why german cars are attaractive to consumers is because they fill up the want list, reliable enough, good looking exterior and interior, marque, performance and handling, rigidity, built quality and technology. the europeans needs to sort out reliability while the japanese needs to make more tasty cars...all for us to benefit

If it wasn't for Merc's infamous fling with Chrysler, this milestone would have been achieved much earlier!

the toyota recall thing must be effecting things.. surprised it has so much.. and on top of it the fact that was brought up is true, Lexus lineup is old other then that hybrid.. need new styles which is what Mercedes has accomplished with new Eclass and also S has been restyled a bit too..i like both..but reliability-wise I'd go with the Lexus..even though driving an S is the best status symbol you can have right?
