Ex-employee charged with selling stolen GM hybrid technology to Chinese
Yu Qin, 49, and his wife, Shanshan Du, 600, 23.07.2010 / U.S. Marshals Service

Couple accused of stealing documents from GM on hybrid technology worth $40 million

A Troy, Michigan couple has been in arraigned in U.S. federal court, accused of possessing trade secrets stolen from GM and trying to sell them to a Chinese party.

Shanshan Du, a former GM employee, and her husband Yu Qin were indicted this week on six-counts of unauthorized possession of trade secrets, wire fraud and obstruction of justice.

According to the U.S. Attorney's Office, when Du left GM in 2005 she copied documents on hybrid technology and gave them to her husband, who then used the knowledge for his own business venture, Millennium Technology International, Inc. The company attempted to supply technology to Chery Automobile, which is a competitor to GM in China, but the information never made it into Chinese hands.

Du and Qin, both naturalized U.S. citizens, also tried to destroy documents subpoenaed by a federal grand jury by shredding and tossing them in a dumpster back in 2006. GM says the documents stolen were worth more than $40 million.

The couple face a maximum penalty of 20 years for the wire fraud and obstruction of justice charges and 10 years for illegal possession of trade secrets.

Du and Qin have entered a plea of not-guilty and have been released on $10,000 unsecured bonds.

"Simple Diesel" is a thing of the past. Take a look at a 2010 Jetta TDI. More sensors than the space shuttle.

they suck... copy everything they can lay eyes on... if they can't copy it, they just buy it up completely so eventually they could own GM in no time when they are getting much wealthier than americans and europeans now...

Before anyone starts throwing stones at these people. If they did it, and I say IF , they are no better or worse than most of our elected officials in the senate, congress and white house.

The Chinese got plenty of money, but they just like to borrow it, so sue them if you like to, they will just pay The idea of "Buying the right to make it" doesn't exist in their mind

@Clement Yes, I am lucky to stay in a "civilized" country. Also, I don't think that any one would ever dispute that there were some important inventions that came out of China or any country at some point in history. That doesn't make me grateful enough to say, "nevermind the multimillion dollar counterfeit business that takes money from American citizens (which also happens to be true), they invented the compass, paper making, printing and explosive powder". No. I could run a laundry list of important American inventions, but I don't think it is necessary. Yes, we are absolutely dependent on China's economy and their goods. That is what a global economy is all about. China depends on our consumers. It works both ways, so I am not terribly grateful for that. There are arguments on both sides of that coin. When you are part of the global economy you have to know your part and play fair. Stealing ideas is underhanded. Always have been, always will be.

For all you guys know these people could of designed the hybrid system for GM or been the lead engineers, and then GM gave them the boot or wasn't willing to pay them a fair amount so they left. If i designed something for a company worth hundreds of millions and then they were shafting me, you bet your ass i'd take the designs and sell them to whoever..Chinese, Iranians, Osama i wouldn't care.

Otakki Are you from this planet???...Do you even know what is going on? Global Warming??? No offense Bro, Diesel Engines pollute the environment more than anything else, I personally dont buy if any manufacturer says that they can build a super clean diesel with very low CO2, CO, SO2, NO or any other toxic gaseous. If you were caught in a jam behind a diesel truck with your windows rolled down....then you would know what I'm talking about. The exhaust fumes are so strong compared to a normal petrol engine which is already damaging enough to the environment. Hybrids and Full Electric Vehicles are the future...because that is the only way we can salvage whats left of the environment.

Especially in the winter when the air mass is thicker so gases tend to stay low...following a diesel truck (even newer ones) can give you a bad headache

I starts feeling very unfomfortable reading this site. American always try and act themselves as International Police, but they are the real terrorist. Look at this post, how the damn it American being the worst racist nation and telling everyone on the planet don't be racist. I cannot remember how many times I've read "I hate Chinese" in posts on this website.

@Clement. I hope that none of my comments have been disturbing to you. It was not my intent to upset anyone. This site is supposed to unite car enthusiasts from everywhere not separate us. Perhaps this article should not have been posted. It is auto related, but I can see how the comments can get out of control.

It is a deep cultural problem. They have no any idea about metaphysical things beyond written long before by predecessors or dictated by collective order. Doing "right" - it means serve humbly your system and you can get rich - that's all. Riping things is proof of deep slavery

It is irrelevant what the ethnic background of this employee is. Russians have also stolen all kinds of information from the Americans. It is wrong no matter what, it is the property of the company regardless of who created it. I am a software engineer and every company I have worked at I have to sign off on an agreement that whatever information I gather from the company is the property of the company as well anything I developed for the company they have the rights to and not me. I hope these people spend a minimum of 20 years in jail because they broke the law and need to pay the consequences. For those slamming the chinese, unfortunately take a look at the American corporations taking business and jobs from Americans and having their products made in China in order to get cheap labor, they are just greety for the most profit they can get and if you get a poorly made product it is not the fault of the chinese, those specifications are set by the American corporations and it is their fault if they don't have quality control in place to ensure the products are made well and are safe. Personally I make it a point of checking the labels of everything I buy and if it is made in China or somethwere like Russia I don't buy it for the very reason stated earlier regarding lack of quality control.
