When the all-new 2011 Ford Explorer comes to market, it will get 30% better fuel economy than the current V6-equipped model, according to the automaker.  Though Ford did not provide specific figures, the next-gen Explorer should deliver 18mpg city, 26 mpg highway, using an inline-four EcoBoost engine.

Sadly, the American company still refuses to send out official photos of the next Explorer in an effort to milk their pre-reveal teaser marketing efforts dry.

The company claims that the new 2.0-liter engine will not sacrifice in power.  They say it will deliver similar figures as the 210-horsepower (157 kW) 4.0-liter V6 that kicks out 254 ft-lb (354 Nm) of torque.  This is not surprising, as the Explorer America concept meant to prove this point with a turbocharged direct injection EcoBoost four cylinder that kicked out 275 horsepower (205 kW) and 280 ft·lbf (380 N·m) of torque.  The fifth-generation SUV's powertrain will include a six-speed automatic transmission and twin independent variable camshaft timing.

The 2011 Ford Explorer will hit showrooms later this year.  The SUV's public debut is scheduled for July 26 in New York.

DEARBORN, Mich., July 19 - All-new Ford Explorer SUV offers best-in-class fuel economy with technologically advanced powertrains featuring multiple enhancements to improve mechanical efficiency

  • Electric power-assisted steering, battery management, fast engine warm-up and the first North American Ford application of a variable-displacement air conditioning compressor all combine to improve drivability, increase efficiency and save fuel.

The Ford Explorer has been reinvented to shatter long-held myths about SUV fuel efficiency and performance.

The 2011 model equipped with an optional 2.0-liter EcoBoost(TM) I-4 engine will be the new class leader in the mid-size SUV segment, achieving at least a 30 percent increase in fuel efficiency compared with the current V-6-powered Explorer.

"The all-new Explorer will give a huge universe of existing and prospective customers the capability they expect and the luxury and convenience they want, all combined with the fuel economy they need," said Mark Fields, Ford president of The Americas.

The new Explorer, due in Ford showrooms later this year, has added comfort and convenience features, while overall vehicle weight is reduced compared to the previous model. Extensive use of lighter and stronger high-strength steels such as boron add durability while saving weight. An aluminum hood is used, while a one-piece composite front bolster - the radiator support between engine and grille - is 65 percent lighter. Lighter weight equates to fuel and money saved.

Sophisticated engine controls and advanced technologies are key contributors to the Explorer's improved fuel economy. Electric power-assisted steering, battery management, fast engine warm-up and aggressive deceleration fuel shutoff all combine to improve drive dynamics and save fuel. Explorer also features the first North American Ford application of a variable-displacement air conditioning compressor that reduces parasitic engine drag.

Powertrain advancements like twin independent variable camshaft timing and six-speed automatic transmissions help Explorer deliver responsive performance when needed combined with low-rpm efficiency when cruising.

SUV buyers placing highest priority on fuel economy can choose the available EcoBoost I-4. Delivering the power of a normally aspirated V6, this advanced engine pairs a turbocharger with direct gasoline injection to provide SUV buyers with projected class-leading fuel economy - pending EPA certification - with no compromise in performance.

Finally, all of these fuel economy enhancements are wrapped in a smooth, distinctive Explorer design that was extensively refined in wind tunnel testing. Designers and aerodynamicists collaborated to reshape sideview mirrors and harmonize the front air dam with the rear liftgate spoiler to significantly increase fuel efficiency on the highway. Reduced wind noise at speed is an incremental benefit.

"Explorer owners told us they want capability with convenience, and improved fuel economy without compromised performance," Fields said. "We believe we've hit the mark with the next-generation Explorer. It has the potential to change perceptions of what a modern SUV is all about."

I do not see the slot for Explorer anymore. Would it not be a slightly longer edge, or cheaper flex. It would certainly cannibalize Flex and Taurus X sales (of what there is) plus create confusion in the minds of customers. Although the design goes head to head with Chevy Traverse/Dead Saturn Outlook/GMC Acadia. May be flex needs to go away and come back as a Lincoln, but then there is the MKT and dying breed to similar Mercury vehicles... confused? you see my point.

the flex just needs to go away as well as the edge. I think the explorer will look better then the edge and the edge is really completing with the much better looking escape for sales. but a 4 banger in an SUV...really Ford?

this fits right between the edge and the expedition...the expedition is a much larger and may i say unnecessarily huge car. IMO no one needs an SUV as big as the expedition.

Wait... so ford has five different SUV models now? Seems like two of those can just go away. Keeping only one small, mid-size, and large model. But I guess if they are all profitable, who am I to judge.

they are profitable because us Americans want bigger cars. although i have no idea where they are going to park. I was the store this morning and a huge Suburban was sticking half way out into the aisle although it was also fully in the space. I have to navigate my impreza past without hitting another car

Never before has my anticipation for a cars final unveiling created such a tingling sensation through out my entire body. I think it's gotta be that teaser photo that features that envious Ford logo on the back, or perhaps that section of head light that screams originality/innovation at just the right angle, or maybe even those really neato cup holders are to blame for getting me all wild. What ever it is, I'm sure I'll be really lucky to see one in person someday. Thanks, Ford!
