Early 309 prototype points to where design on the 308 successor is headed

This is one of the first images of the upcoming Peugeot 309 - which will be the successor to the current 308.

This 309 model appears to be an early-stage mock-up prototype and this photo of it likely comes from a French car magazine.

Being so early, we shouldn't expect the final product to look like this, as the design development is likely still being overseen by Peugeot design chief Gilles Vidal.

What stands out on this 309 is the new face, which resonates the recently revealed 508, with its sleeker cat's eyes of the headlights and the tighter-looking mouth of the front grill.

The bonnet features deep grooves and the side doors too have some soft indentations to give the 309 a fleshier look.

At the rear, although its hard to tell from this single shot from the front, the hatch seems more economically flat in contrast to the larger bulges at the ends where the taillights are fitted which appear similar to the current 308.

The new 309 won't be making it to dealer showrooms until 2013.

It's a little bit strange to use the 309 once again and for a totally different model range (i'm referring to the 1985 Peugeot 309 of which they build over 1.5 milion units). They should do like Alfa Romeo and switch to a different nomenclature which isn't based on numbers. I think that this would be a very big mistake.

I remember the 309 GTI... that was supposed to be one real good druvers car. What's happened with Peugeot? They lost it somewhere!

The front end still looks too big, but at least they are taking styling cues from the SR1 Concept. I wonder if they'll do a notchback body to complement the previous 309?

We owned a 1991 Peugeot 309 Series II. It was a very nice ride. I really liked the big trunk. The equipment and safety-standards weren't that good and not up to date in the early 90s. The old Talbot-construction was a nice notchback and I hope, the carcompanies will come back to layouts like Nissan Sunny, Peugeot 309, Opel Astra G and so on. A nice short stepback is elegant and practical. The Hatchbacks are currently a bit boring. about the "new 309": the design looks nice, the hole front is really great, only what I can see from the back isn't that special.

Unfortunately it's unlikely that a rear end of the 309's design will make it back into the range. Companies these days have fallen into using the same template as every other - 3/5door flat-backed hatchback, 5dr estate and 4door saloon. The only notchbacks these days are Mondeo-sized, or in other words, 508-sized. I'd have thought the notchback was more aerodynamic than the body just stopping abruptly like hatches do (although I suppose that's why they're all turning into more rounded coupé-style bodies), plus when you add the extra practicality it seems like a great idea.

Rear looks like the 206+, front seems ok. I would also be surprised to see them reusing 309 name Let's hop it'll be 5doors, not 4doors.

I don't think it's new 309. It can be Peugeot 208.

I also think it would be the new 208 (which I think be called something else)... but I don't think this is a leak as such, though I must say it looks great.
