New CLS features softer design lines for this 4-door coupe

In these spy shots here, taken in Stuttgart, we get to see the upcoming 2012 Mercedes-Benz CLS completely uncovered.

We've already been able to spot the flatter nose of the new CLS in previous spy photos, a styling cue borrowed from the SLS Gullwing, but seeing the CLS in the bare like this one can more easily take in its design as a whole and spot things like its slight resemblance to the VW Passat CC.

New styling cues for the CLS are a fresh set of headlights with LED running lights. At the back, the wrap-around taillights seem more stretched towards the center of the rear end. There is the flattened nose too and the overall shoulder line seems to make the CLS stand a little more upright than its predecessor.

Petrol/gasoline engines for the new CLS will include Mercedes-Benz's 3.5 liter V6 with 306 PS (225 kW / 301 bhp) and a 435 PS (320 kW / 429 bhp) 4.7 liter twin-turbo V8. On the diesel side will be a 204 PS (150 kW / 201 bhp) four-cylinder and a 3.0 liter V6 diesel with 252 PS (185 kW / 248 bhp).

A CLS 63 AMG will follow, of course, powered by the brand's 5.5 liter, twin-turbo V8 churning out 544 PS (400 kW/536 bhp) and 800 Nm (590 lb-ft) of torque.

The new CLS will likely make its debut this fall at the Paris motor show.

+1 definitely! Front is almost ok, but rear window and back are horrible, looks like a TownCar or this kind of limo.

I disagree. The rear lights work in nicely with E-Class style rear guards and it avoids the sad-arsed look of the current model. The whole look is far more resloved and harmonious.

Not so impressive as it was in previous coverage of spy photos with red painted model. Hope it's all because of the colour and wheels

What's wrong with MB's designers? These new looks are so damn ugly. It looks like the VW passat.

This MB is ugly... Who said Passat CC is ugly? It's the best auto design for 2009!

this car is complete and utter bulls%!t. what a pathetic successor to such a breathtaking design in the C219. they need to throw this thing in the back of the museum under a car cover and start over from scratch. stop being so damn conservative with the CLS! they've gone way too mainstream and dare i say, E-Class, with this car. hugely disappointing, gordon wagener is a joke.

This is a good looking design, but not as exclusive as the first CLS looked when it came out. With the money in the pocket I'd buy the first ClS...

Judging from these photos, I think the first CLS is more sporty. A worthy design to be called "Sport Sedan", this thing looks just a MB "Sedan". I don;t feel the sportiness in it

I don't like it as much as the old one! I think they ruined it. What would be nice is if they had the old shape with the E class interior.

buy your C219 CLSs now while they're still available, an ugly successor like this will ensure that they hold their value. pathetic MB.

The front end really reminds us of Passat CC, but "remind" doesn't mean "the same as" and after all, CC is a perfect car... The rear end, I don't know what to say. I guess I just have to get used to it and it'll be alright... Overall, maybe seeing it LIVE will make a better picture...

Blegh I'm starting to really dislike the way MB is designing their cars these days. IMO this would look nice if it resembled the E Coupe in any way. The current CLS is a classic, I don't think MB can design anything that can replace it considering the direction they're heading in.
