Bugatti Veyron Super Sport hits 259 mph piloted by errr... Captain Slow

Top Gear host tries to shed his nickname

More Top Gear news (those show-offs!). James May has taken the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport for a little spin which peaked at almost 260 mph.

It appears that Captain Slow (a.k.a. James May), one of the co-hosts of the BBC's Top Gear show, is doing whatever he can to shed him nickname. May was apparently on hand for some of the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport's track testing, as the model was trying to set a new land speed world record, and himself took the Super Sport for a ride, pushing the speedometer up to a reading of 259.11 mph (417 km/h).

Earlier this month, the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport set a new land speed record at the Volkswagen Group's Ehra-Lessien track piloted by Pierre Henri Raphanel. Between two runs on the track near VW's headquarters in Wolfsburg, Germany, Raphanel set an average top speed of 431,072 km/h (267.81 mph).

You can read the whole story of Captain Slow's adventure with the Veyron Super Sport in Top Gear Magazine's August issue.

i guess you're talking from your experience as a Veyron owner. i actually met a Veyron owner at a rally and he's very happy with his car which he uses in the REAL world.

Infact, VW had spent a lot of time , money, and effort to make this car realistic and usable in the REAL world with this amount of power. The Veyron is truly a remarkable piece of engineering. I won't be surprised if one finds himself more comfortable using the Veyron as a daily driver than a SV.

I can vouch for that last sentence, awhk. I haven't piloted the mighty Veyron, but I've driven a Murcielago at an experience day (not an SV, but it's the same body etc.) and you can hardly see out the bloody thing. It's a great car and everything, but not a daily driver. It's too hard to enter and exit, 2m wide, very low and not the most comfortable. While it's fair to say I didn't drive it on the street, that can't be a good recepie...

HIMSELF?!!! You mean the plain and simple "he". Samuel Johnson will be spinning in his grave. The Veyron SS sounds great. Shame about the Max Power colour scheme.

I believe that one of the reasons that makes the 1000 horsepower so useable on the streets is probably it's weight. With more than 2 tonnes pushing on all four fat tyres and four wheel drive, the "every-day userfriendliness" is probably 99% achieved.

1:16.8 Lap Time on Top Gear track, new record from Bugatti Veyron SS. Those who doubts about Veyron cornering can start eating their hats. Peace.
