Always wonder about the additional wear on the cylinder and piston rings for those car that shuts off the turns on the engine at stops to save fuel. Since more than 70% of the wear occurs at starting due to no oil presence at that time. Of course, I wonder if such frequent starting creates additional stress on the starting motor.

Yes, but the engine will have only been off for a minute or two at most, so there will still be a good film of oil on all necessary parts. I'd be more concerned about the wear and tear on the starter components. However, I have heard of starter/alternators being integrated into the transmissions fly-wheel. Those types of starters would likely be unaffected/less affected by that sort of duty cycle.

all of this has been considered and starter motors designed around the higher frequencies endured. As to wear on the engine, I cannot comment but I'm sure these technologies wouldn't be in place if a liability for the manufacturer.

how does it feel driving an M3 sitting at the light with the start/stop happening? all of a sudden it will be quiet... almost like the engine stalling?

It's a lot of nonsense for a lousy few percent gain..... The car is a gas guzzler and that can't be changed with this feature or any for that matter.

Is this due to a new Euro Law?... That's pointless. You'll probably save 1 litre per 100 km, yet when the road is busy and the auto turn off will act it will be very annoying.

1 litre per 100km's is a HUGE amount, I don't reckon it's that much, but all helps to (a) reduce fuel costs and (b) carbon emissions / general pollution. And the motor doesn't just cut out straight away, but I think it requires a period of inactivity, or it would cut out all the time when in a traffic jam (something it doesn't do)
