New Toyota Supra due in 2014 - rumors

Akio Toyoda, head of Japanese automaker Toyota Motor Co., says he would like to see a new Toyota Supra hit the market.  Seen in 2007 as the FT-HS concept at the the Detroit Motor Show, the fifth-generation Supra would be the first in showrooms since the Mark IV was cancelled in 2002.

Toyoda used to test drive the fourth-gen Supra on the Nurburgring, and the idea of developing a better version became a pet project for the company chief.  Speculation suggests the car would use a hybrid powertrain involving a V6 engine.

But not everyone in the company is inline with Toyoda's wishes.  Since the company is already preparing a replacement to the MR-2, and the FT-86 sports car is an advanced development stages with Subaru, some may not see the need for a Supra release anytime soon.

Though Toyoda says he "wants to see the next Supra tested in the near future," he acknowledges that even if he wants the car to be released "the whole company is not going to be responding to that request," according to a published interview.

well, the current 370Z has more power than a stock 90's supra with prices and sales that is good for business..I can see a potential with its gearbox moved to the back, in-line 6, 450hp and hopelly sleek styling. marketing wise cars like these are good to attract attention to the brand name, people more excited visitng their showrooms, more interest in their webpage etc etc

An LF-A for the people, I hope. Toyota should produce it, steal some thunder away from the GT-R.

Bla bla bla, since what, 1997? many of us have been waiting for a new supra and nothing, it seems as if every 3 years or so a new rumor pops up. This one sounds as a PR stunt just to draw away attention from the recalls, and eventually will end up being nothing but hot air as all of the other ones.. until I see spy pics of an actual pre-production/test model on the ring or such, I will simply call it a BLUFF

If they do produce it let's hope they keep the design intact. Nice and angular and designed in California.

Well, if the economic situation improves... I don't see any excuse for Toyota not producing the next-gen Supra. Time will tell!

Well, the much-maligned Lexus LF-S supercar is practically sold-out despite its laughable price-tag (£350k). Can you bet against the iconic Supra for the 21st Century being 'produced'? I can't! Awesome lines and great wrap-around glass pillar design. Too Fast, Too Furious indeed!
