Next S-Class may be bigger and will come with new technologies

Here are the latest spy shots of the upcoming next-generation 2012 Mercedes-Benz S-Class.

Last time, it was a mule we caught testing, yet still, there is not much to be learned from these pics since this prototype still seems to be hiding underneath, at least in part, a current S-Class body. Some body panels, though, look to be taken from the current E-Class, from which it may be borrowing some styling cues, although, in the larger dimensions of the S-Class. Camouflage is tasked with covering up the rest.

From the previous set of spy pics we've also seen an S-Class that appears to be wider and longer than the current generation. So the model may grow in size.

Look for new technologies to be introduced in the next iteration of the S-Class too. Those include the 'MoVe' modular V6 and V8 engines that Mercedes-Benz is developing. Details on their features are scarce but the engines come with direct-injection and turbocharging and will deliver improved fuel economy and lower C02 emissions.

A plug-in hybrid variant of the S-Class is also in the works - based on the Vision S 500 concept. It will come with a 3.0 liter V6 petrol/gasoline engine with direct-injection coupled to a 44 kW (60 PS) electric motor. A drivetrain combo that Mercedes says will offer impressive numbers such as a 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) sprint time in under six seconds and a mileage rating of around 3 liters/100 km (78 mpg).

This is neither a current S-Class body nor does it have any E-Class parts on it (other than the mirrors, which many MB models share). Where do either of those statements come from?

This is the standard, the measuring stick, the one car that determines where the rest of the industry is going. To me a new generation of cars starts every time a new S-class comes out. I'm beyond excited to see the first signs of life from the new big boss. Please, Mercedes, do come up with a new interior design that deviates from what we've seen lately from you. I haven't seen a nice-looking interior in a Mercedes-Benz since the 2007 CL. This new retro-looking thing just does not work, aesthetically speaking at least.

Clearly this is a mule vehicle using 2010 S-Class body panels plus plastic parts to hide the new proportions and underpinnings of the new model. Is not using any styling cues from the E-Class or showing any cues for the next gen S-Class since this is still a mule.

I'm not so sure about that. The doors look similar but they're not the same. Note the position of the rear door handles, or the distance between either handle and the windowsill. I think what we're seeing is an actual car with a lot of disguise. The good news is that the goofy wheel arches seem to be going away, but overall it looks to be an evolutionary design. I agree, though, on the lack of E cues!

i don't see any big deal about design here...look at AUDI, THEY ARE ALL THE SAME, so what...why shouldn't be a Mercedes-Benz :)))
