SSC Ultimate Aero seeks to reclaim world fastest production car record
SSC Ultimate Aero

Our good friends at Jalopnik are reporting that the engineering team at Shelby SuperCars are considering renewing the SSC Ultimate Aero to reclaim the "World's Fastest Production Car" title.  The Aero was stripped of the moniker after the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport was clocked at 431.072 km/h (268 mph).

In a statement congratulating the Bugatti team, Shelby said, "When the Ultimate Aero broke the record in 2007, we knew it was just a matter of time until it was broken by someone else."

"Having famed American designer Jason Castriota as our lead design enables SSC to reflect its engineer and performance in its aesthetics," the company's statement read.  "It's impossible for us to be more thrilled about having him on board and we're anxious to show the world what we have up our sleeve."

The company's new project is expected to debut before the end of the summer, and should top their 6.2-liter twin-turbo V8-engined SSC Ultimate Aero TT.  The Aero is just 17 horsepower shy of the 1,200 hp produced by the Veyron 16.4 Super Sport's engine.

i've always wondered how much power the veyron is actually getting to the ground? has anyone dyno'd a veyron? i imagine it's "only" putting somewhere between 800 and 850 horse to the ground lol

6.2L Pushrod small block Chevy, competing against a 8.0L W16 engine and the Chevy is just 17 horsepower shy!!!! Talk about an over-engineered German piece of crap! And before you start, yes the 6.2L is durable enough to put out those numbers all day, it has been proven over numerous years now at Bonnevile, Maxton, and at races like the Silver State Classic Challenge where daily driven LS powered cars mop the floor with exotic's all day.

Your comment was as useless and missing the point as you being called "thebenchmark". see hussainanmar's comment below. its also how it does it. if you just want pure hp go buy a dragster/ssc. if you want a car that does it with effortless stability and comfort go get a veyron. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fmYJlZvaKfc.

Wow, look who is all up in arms. Take it easy muscle monkey. I was simply comparing two different engines with similar output. I find it very hard to justify all the extra money and effort put into the development of the W16 when some guy in his garage can build a stronger and more reliable engine using off the shelf parts and modest cash. You said: "its also how it does it. if you just want pure hp go buy a dragster/ssc. if you want a car that does it with effortless stability and comfort go get a veyron." Well I know the saying is "It's not the size of the boat, it's the motion in the ocean!" but let me tell you boy, them girls have been lying to you all along. Size, or in this case horsepower is what I'm speaking about and numbers are numbers. If it's your mani-pedi your worried about ruining and it's smoothness you desire then go buy a Lexus. In the meantime you cannot tell me the ENGINE (note I'm specifying engine because I know the Veyron as a whole package is an amazing piece of engineering) is any feat of engineering. Honda's that run 10 second 1/4 miles are engineering marvels. Not some over-hyped chunk of metal that can only be purchased by Arab shieks.

I'm sure the V8 is more than enough to challenge the Veyron engine. Its other little expensive things that seem to add up. Stability is probably the number one issue. Besides, a lot of good cars can travel that fast with mods anyhow.

100% correct. I was just comparing engines.

You can make almost any car capable of reaching any desired top speed. I remember that it has been proven by BMW 1.6-1.8L engine (I don't quite remember), they got out more than 1500hp after some good modifications. The problem is then with the stability, acceleration conditions, comfort, and the list continues.. Well you're car is 17hp shy of the Bugatti Veyron, but you should be 1001% shy to make such comparisons. The design of the SSC Ultimate Aero is sincerely aweful, down-dated, and I guess that the interior is just 'fantastic' plastic. Bugatti will forever remain a legend. It's like the saying "Mercedes and all the other cars" -even though I'm a BMW fan. :)

See, I don't understand the animosity against this car. SSC does not intend to destroy the Veyron or put it to shame. If anything it's been motivating VW to seek ways to stay on top. The Veyron is magnificent, yes, but I don't see anyone acknowledging that the fact that a small company has been able to play the top speed game with the Veyron like this is commendable, to say the very least. Yes, the exterior design is dull, unoriginal, and VERY boring, and I'm sure the interior materials aren't up to the Veyron standards (that's not what SSC wants, either), but the car has accomplished a lot without a tenth of the hype behind the Veyron. Props to SSC, props to their engineering team, and I wish them the best of luck. Haters just need to get laid. Stop being immature and arrogant, people. Calling it "P.O.S." like they've even driven it already. Ironically, people who actually have driven it have only said the best things about it. How interesting.

Buggatis are just overpriced and ugly. I'll rather have a nice red or yellow Ferrari which is 100x more respectable than this 1.2 million dollar VW badged with a " BUGATTI " piece of crap. the only reason someone will buy this car is to tell " look people i got money " which he properly a rapper, like Lil wayne haha. On the other hand the SSC is much more respectable, cheaper + more power using a smaller engine with 8 less cylinders and better looks = Bugatti is a rappers car lool.

Ignorance is the root of the world's problems today. It's beyond me how someone can judge this car and talk about its "stability" and deem a veyron a better machine when 99.999% have never even sat in either much less driven it? Even though the SSC is half the price of the veyron its still over half a million bucks and out of almost everyone's league. Looks alone, ill take an SSC....i think veyrons are waaaaayyy too ugly. Performance, price and simplicity....ill still take the ssc. I love the euro nut-sack huggers that come on here to bash anything american when they dont have the slightest clue about either vehicle, like the above guy who claims the stability and feel is better in a veyron! Have you driven one?!? I think ill take Jay Leno's word for it.....he can afford and has driven both cars.
