Audi RS6 production coming to an end

Audi RS6 production coming to an end
Audi RS 6 Avant

Next-generation Audi A6 is expected to debut next year - a new RS6 iteration will undoubtedly follow

Audi will end production of the current RS6 model at the end of the third quarter.

But the model will undoubtedly make its market return in a couple of years since the next-generation Audi A6 is scheduled to debut sometime early next year - probably at the Geneva auto show in March 2011.

The now-discontinued RS6 model featured a 5.0 liter, twin-turbo V10 engine producing 579 PS (426 kW / 571 bhp) and 650 Nm (479 lb-ft) of torque.

For the next iteration, what does Audi plan to fit under the hood?

Talk around town is that Audi may decided to downsize the engine to a turbo-enhanced V8 but that it will very likely match, or even outdo, the upcoming BMW M5 which is expected with a twin-turbo V8 generating between 550 and 600 PS - perhaps something along the lines of the X5 M and X6 M's 4.4 liter V8 power plant with 555 PS. How Audi get there while still meeting the subtle requirements of competitive fuel economy and CO2 ratings is the question.

Just last week, BMW ended production of its current E60 M5 with anticipation brewing for the upcoming F10 M5 based on the new 5-Series BMW introduced earlier this year. The E60 M5 came with a 5.0-liter V10 engine with 516 PS (380 kW / 509 hp) and 520 Nm (380 ft-lb) of torque, far below that of the RS6's 579 PS.

@ alexr. Rs6 was just a little bit quicker than the M5 while the M5 had the top end in ever other aspect. audi needed 82more hps and 4 years just to over take the M5 by 3 to 4 cars lengths, while in a straight line the M5 still have destroyed it. Next Rs6 will need about 660hp take out take the M5's 580hp looool.

This car was the mother and the beast of all sports cars with alot of power and the quattro all wheel drive. A very quick way to get from point A to B.

This car is the mother, and the M5 is the father. rs6 is messed up either way that's why the cut the production in 1 and half year.

Audi did not said that they will end RS6!!!!! WCF said that not Audi...... Please people read this story carefuly.... And WCF please don't guess what Audi will do with it's next gen RS6, but just wait..... And one more thing, if RS5 V8 have 450PS, than how you think how many ponys(PS) will be in V8 twin-turbo??????

Check the sources. Focus is one of Germany's most respected news magazines. And it has been widely reported that Audi was halting production on the current RS6 at the end of the third quarter. The speculation that Audi will try to top the next M5 comes from the very clear fact that they did so with the current iteration of the RS6 vis-a-vis the E60 M5. It's a reasonable one to make. But we did say Audi will "likely match, or even outdo," the M5. Which is a very safe comment as far as assumptions go.

The secure 5-door Avant with more power than a Ferrari F50. R.I.P. It's absence does make room for a new RS model though. RS3? RS1 Quattro with 250PS? RS7?

It makes room for RS5, and RS5 already had it's public debut.

Such a bad ass car, absolutely love the Avant. That bodykit really adds some panache to the standard Audi which I find extremely bland. I love that Top Gear episode where Hammond slams this thing down an icey alpine road in a race against a couple skiers, epic stuff.
