Official: BMW 1 Series M Coupe revealed in teaser video

It's still sporting camo, but you can still bear witness to its agility on the track

The BMW 1-Series M Coupe is coming.

And BMW M GmbH have released this teaser video that provides a glimpse as to what the model will be like. It's still sporting camo, but you can still bear witness to its agility on the track.

Right now, BMW is only giving journalists from Germany and Austria a ride along in a 1-Series M on a track in Ascari, Spain, driven by BMW test drivers. As Dr. Kay Segler, CEO of BMW M GmbH says in the video, others "will have to wait for it."

The model will be officially unveiled sometime before Christmas but we are are likely to get more hints, details and teasers before then. After much hesitation on whether BMW would deliver a smaller M car below the M3, the Bavarian brand finally decided to go ahead and make it. Though, BMW M seems to want to avoid confusion with the M1 of old, as is calling it the 1-Series M instead.

"There are so many people out there just dreaming to have a BMW M car. We are here to realize dreams," says Segler in the video.

And in the accompanying interview, he goes on to explain that since the M3 has grown and matured over its nearly 25-year history, it was time to offer something more basic to BMW customers.

"This is why it is one of my most urgent goals to offer a small, affordable M model in the tradition of the very first BMW M3," said Segler in the interview (see press release below).

Interview with Dr. Kay Segler.

Dr. Kay Segler has been in charge at BMW M GmbH for just over a year. Under the motto "Automobile dreams. Making them come true", the BMW M3 GTS was created as an impressive example of how important it is to "Mister M" to fulfil customer wishes.

His philosophy is that making dreams come true has top priority. This is also reflected by numerous prototype photographs currently in circulation on the internet. As the BMW M3 celebrates its 25th anniversary, we were interested to find out more.

Dr. Segler, the BMW M3 was first produced in 1986 and delivered from 1987. Hasn't the anniversary got underway a little early?
The BMW M3 was presented to the world public at the IAA in Frankfurt in 1985. This is generally our reference point. But in a way you are right: we could celebrate the anniversary of the BMW M3 over a period of three years - the car certainly deserves it.

Will there be an anniversary model? A special edition?
Very much so. With the BMW M3 GTS we have a model in the range which more than fits the bill in this regard. Whether or not there will be any other special edition produced on a larger scale is not possible for me to say at the moment.

How many BMW M3 GTS will there be?
We don't want to state a concrete figure at the moment. However, production capacity for this hand-made vehicle is highly limited. As things stands at the moment there will be fewer than 150 BMW M3 GTS. So it will be a rare collector's piece.

How important is the BMW M3 to BMW ?
As far as BMW M GmbH is concerned it is the core model, the backbone. No other BMW M automobile embodies the values of our brand more consistently. This applies not just to BMW M but to BMW as a whole.

Which is your favourite M3?
One of my first official acts last year was to test drive our current and our historical models. One of them impressed me particularly: the BMW M3 E30.

What is that you especially appreciate in the car?
The BMW M3 of the first generation still offers excellent handling and a very special drive feel. It is direct and focused on the essentials - a pure driving machine. And at its time it was unsurpassed.

How do you define unsurpassed?
Everyone dreams, many people have automobile dreams. So it's important to make these dreams come true. Some decide to make dreams come true for a small group of people. We would like to reach a wider group, and at an earlier time in their lives.

Why is there nothing like this today?
All models grow, have more equipment features and options which can be freely chosen. Ultimately this is reflected in the vehicle dimensions, weight and price, too. This is why it is one of my most urgent goals to offer a small, affordable M model in the tradition of the very first BMW M3.

What might such a model be like?
This model will be based on the BMW 1 Series Coupé and also be focused on the essentials - the fascination of driving. And it will reflect a love of detail, too.

Will the model be called BMW M1?
We have discussed this point too. BMW M1 is a name with powerful historical associations. So we have decided to follow our second nomenclature method. In the tradition of the BMW Z4 Roadster and of the current models BMW X5 M and X6 M we will put our brand identifier at the end of the name, so our new model will be called the BMW 1 Series M Coupé.

When can we expect to receive further information?
We will be publishing more detailed information before Christmas. And we may release the odd detail beforehand. Wait and see!

Where will the information be provided?
You can register here on M-Power.com. In this way you can be sure not to miss any information on the BMW 1 Series M Coupé.

From when will the BMW 1 Series M Coupé be supplied?
You can expect the first vehicles to be with customers in the first half of 2011.

What else is in store in the near future?
There is a lot more for BMW M fans to look forward to in the second half of 2011 as well. We will be presenting the next generation of the BMW M5 with V8 turbo engine. But let's talk about the details another time.

Dr. Segler, thank you for the interview.

 M! M!
this is very logical in the development and marketing. the toughest thing is to name it properly. i hope they will not call it an M1.

With the life of the current generation 1 Series coming to an end, why would the M department waste money on developing it to an M car? As for the buyers and owners, I feel sorry for you if you decide to buy one because it?d be old technology in less than a year and that obviously means devaluation. Unless, it is your objective to collect every single M car out there.

i think it's clever marketing. most people don't know (or don't care) that a new model is on the way, and it creates new interest in their ageing car, so they can shift a few more units before the end of its life.

I hope BMW can make it with a proper high revving NA engine with a proper manual box, even though I know they will have the turbo charged 6 in it, but can it have a proper manual box only? So posers won't buy it

I thought the dual clutch is quicker than the manual. have you tried the dual clutch gear box? am i "poser" because i am just bored to switch between gears the time i am not "racing" in the city?

It may change gears quicker than a manual, but a driver's car has a "proper" 'box to add to the driving feel. Paddleshifters are just the easy option, and yet another technology that takes the human away from the driving experience. The manual is the purist's choice every time.

I'm all for turbos in any car - more efficient. As to manual, it should be a choice I reckon based on personal preference, 'posers' is derogatory (although I will always drive stick over auto)

@Mikeado: by your logic, carburetors are more of a purist's car than fuel-injection. or that whale oil is better than petroleum. what is so wrong about accepting the fact that in this day and age, dual-clutch transmissions are simply better than their manual counterparts?

according to some infos I read from other site, it has a proper manual box, YAY!

@atlasmason how is double clutch better than manual? I know it changes gears faster and stuff, but what about weight? top speed? or even reliability for a extremely long period of time? Not trying to make an argument here, but if BMW is doing what they did with the M3 by only offering it with a proper manual at the start, I'm fine with it.

I like your style MTC, but for better or worse it looks like the trend is engine downsizing and DCTs. I will lament the day when there are no longer any manual trannies on the market, as I think they are so much more fun and involving.

This is gonna be real successor of BMW M3 E30, a car that still offers excellent handling and a very special drive feel - a pure driving machine.

Price? HP? this is what it comes down to, given the fact that you have 335i, and 135i, which with only a few upgrades can get them to be very juicy.

I think it will be somewhere near $45,000 , and about power since performance package gives it 335Hp it should be higher ,,,, yeah a dinan 135i can make 390hp but you won't get a M car , will you?
July 9, 2010 7:17 am
 SmamaBello SmamaBello
the problem becomes when you have an M car stopped at the light and all of a sudden an 135i with a an upgraded ecu smokes you, and here you are paid over 10 grand more. I understand is not just speed, handling counts as well but hey how would you take a 50grand car to the track.

include suspension updates alongside your ECU upgrade, the 135i is notorious for body roll

I will love it...and I will wait for it! Finally something to make my boring commute to work exciting...and an excuse to work late hours in the office for a clear uncongested road back home! Thank you BMW... and this coming from a guy who currently has 2 MB's in the garage and has bought and sold 5 MB's in the past 6 years!

"There are so many people out there just dreaming to have a BMW M car. We are here to realize dreams,"..... thats sounds kind of egotistical to me, dont get me wrong, the M line of cars are very nice but i dont dream of owning one, alot of other cars come to mind before an M car.

It's not really that egotistical. As for myself, I've always dreamed of having an E-36 M3. Heck I still want one.

"affordable" - suppose in another lifetime unfortunately. Cars are cheaper in the US than in Europe or other regions. 2nd hand 135i in a few years is my only option :(

Still there is thousands if not hundred of thousands of people dreaming to own an M car. So it doesn't matter if u don't care about it :) ///M cars sells like hot cakes. They sell more than ///AMG and 100X more than //rs.
