Pagani Zonda R sets new unofficial Nurburgring record - live photos

Since their first vehicle was released in 1999, fans have certainly known that Pagani cars were quick, to say the least.  Now the company is laying claim to one of the most prestigious lap records around, with an unofficial report that the Pagani Zonda R finished the difficult Nürburgring Nordschleife circuit in just 6m 47s.

The photos here show the Zonda R as it made its alleged record-breaking run.  Pagani's driver is currently unknown, though FIA GT Championship driver Marc Basseng has driven for them in the past.

The lap time, if true, is just one second faster than the record set by the Radical SR8 LM, claimed in August 2009 with Dutch driver Michael Vergers behind the wheel.  Pagani's alleged time completely demolishes the 6m 58s time posted by the Ferrari 599XX in April.

Weighing only 1,070 kilograms, the Pagani Zonda R is able to race to 100 km/h in under 2.7 seconds.  It has a 351 km/h (218 mph) top speed, thanks to its 740-horsepower (552 kW / 750 PS) 6.0-liter V12 engine.  The engine sends out up to 710 Nm (524 ft-lb) of torque, guaranteeing ultra fast sprints.

At a cost of €1.5 million, only 15 units of the Zonda R will be assembled.

June 30th, 2010 - NÜRBURGRING, Germany

Pagani Automobili SpA would like to announce that the Pagani Zonda R has lapped the difficult and tortuous 20.83 km Nürburgring Nordschleife in 6 minutes and 47 seconds.

On this track with its 73 corners, bumps and compressions each component of the vehicle is exposed to severe stresses, that cannot be reproduced on other tracks. Each of Horacio Pagani's creations has to be subjected to this ordeal, in order to reassure and guarantee the customers that they have bought a vehicle built without compromise, able to take the toughest treatment.

The laptime has been possible also due to a weight reduction of almost 200 kg compared to the road going Zonda F, including a carbon-titanium frame, lightened suspensions, a lower center of gravity, reduced polar inertia and improved downforce.

The Pirelli P Zero Slick tyres specially designed for Zonda R derived from the know-how, materials and expertise of Pirelli's Motorsports division, give an essential contribution to the extraordinary levels of grip.

The bespoke Pirelli P Zero slick tyres are created in Milan at the first line MIRS, the latest evolution of the innovative automated process patented by Pirelli, able to cover the entire production cycle, from compounds to the finished product without interruption or the waste of energy. The MIRS process represents Pirelli's technological excellence and focuses on the production of Ultra High Performance and Motorsport tyres. In light of the technological goals that are achieved during the ongoing development, the Pagani team is pursuing the application of such results on future road going Pagani vehicles.

This result has been achieved in partnership with Pirelli, Mercedes-AMG, Bosch, ASPA, MHG, Logico, Bagatti and Ennegi.

At least none of THESE pictures of proof have giant penis graffiti on the track like Ferrari's xD As blindingly fast as this is, and as much as I adore the Zonda, laying claim to a Nurburgring record isn't something to take entirely seriously, as it's rather unscientific. Some people use different start/finish lines, and the cars are driven by different drivers of different skills. If they were all piloted by the same person on the same day, it'd mean more. Currently it's more of a guideline to how fast a car is in relation to others. But however you cut it, that car is pretty damn fast! If only I had ?1.5m. Do Pagani actually let you keep your Zonda R or is it like Ferrari XX's?

That's why it's best to use this site to compare numbers, it tells you track conditions and lengths driven. http://www.fastestlaps.com/track2.html

It's just logic that this car is so fast: Extremely low weight, perfect weight balance with a very short front and mid engine concept, a true racing engine - V12 by AMG, naturally aspirated, racing clutch... The concept of this car is very close to the FXX so it has to be one of the fastest in the world. I think, Pagani is the most remarkable of all the small supercar brands. It has its very own style and design and a FULLY CHROMED GERMAN MERCEDES AMG ENGINE! So that's the best combination: Italian design and flair and a german engine. The best of two worlds. ;)

Wheels magazine did it in December 05. It posted a 7:40 lap. Hardly groundbreaking. The Enzo and Carrera GT were much faster, in fact the nearly-two-tonne Bug is slower than the Nissan GT-R on the ring.

this got to be the funniest comment ever. comparing a pagani zonda with a bugatti veyron. the first couple of turns and the bugatti will be good bye. BTW, Chris, learn how to spell VEYRON before commenting.

Obviously that car is really a race car, not a street car by any means and remember Stefan Bellof run the Ring already in 6:11,13 in 1983 on his Porsche 956. there's a lot of cars out there you can modify that are still "road-based" that will run ridiculous times, not that impressed at all.

of course it's a race car...it was developed in a program similar to that of the fxx. I bet that porsche couldn't produce the sound this car does. Look it up on youtube and you will jizz in your pants, guaranteed!

the 956 was built to destroy the competition (which it did) and not created for some engine sound.

i'm sure the mercedes-sauber c9, c112, the peugeot 905LM, or the toyota Eagle Mk III IMSA GTP could all be faster than the 956 around the ring. Just saying... its still a very impressive record!

This car has been out for a while now, what took them so long to get a record out. This really is a pretty great achievement because the base Zonda's achieved lap times of around 7:30.

it's not street legal, than it's not good.... same like FXX.... but Apollo S is coming soon to Nurburgring :) and thats the fastest street legal car at the moment out there :)

The "record lap" made by Gumpert was done with semislicks, so still nothing to worry about when they had to use those tyres to beat a Viper... Btw, Pagani could easily "pay" to make it street legal, just like Apollo did. So the Apollo "is not good", too, since it doesn't meet several paragraphs of the German traffic regulations.

In canada there is one way to bring this car in, and any car for that matter as long as it passes the emissions. All you have to do is not bring the car in with a drive train, no engine, transmission, or wheels. Bring all that stuff in a separate shipping container, pay for a Pagani tech to come and assemble it. The car will be registered as a kit car and almost none of the standard road requirements matter. Same way you would bring in an R34 Skyline, but most people aren't willing to pay 75k for a R34 skyline to bring it in and have it all setup. When you are spending 1.5mil you really dont care about another 100k to make your car street legal.
