Company goes crossover crazy?

According to a recent report, Mercedes will launch a BMW X4 competitor in 2014.

Tentatively dubbed the GLC (Geländecoupe), the crossover will feature sporty styling and a coupe-like roofline. Measuring 4.4 meters long, the vehicle will reportedly ride on the MFA platform which will underpin the next-generation A- and B-Class. Engine options are expected to include a 204 PS (150 kW / 201 hp) 1.8-liter four-cylinder petrol and a 170 PS (125 kW / 168 hp) 2.2-liter four-cylinder diesel.

As we have previously reported, Mercedes has already confirmed they are working on a B-Class crossover. Known as the BLK, the model will compete with the BMW X1 and Audi Q3.

mercedes tries to outdo the X6 when it comes to pointlessness, right? how stupid can it get to build a offroad-coupe which is even smaler than the x6?

I'm sure an SUV with rear seats in which nobody taller than 3ft can fit would satisfy many consumers, scratchy.

If we're gonna watch what all is pointless than the world would be full of Toyotas and nothing else. Based on the sales X6 is clearly smart move, so Stop writing nonsenses.

IN_ACtion , it's a matter of perception , what's pointless for you isn't pointless for others and the other way around. i'm sure for some tribes in Africa most things in the "civilized" world are pointless.

@ 2010S5 , it's a niche product , it doesn't have to satisfy everyone, but it satisfies more than enough people to justify its production.

of course the streets would be full of dull cars if every one buys the cars he really needs. but most of the people buyin those high-ridincoupes (e.g. the X6) could easily get themseles a much nicer normal coupe and wouldnt miss out on anything cause they are usin them only on normal streets. i'm just not abig fan of suvs and those "SAC"s are just awful if people want to buy a "offroad" coupe so be it, but i will never understand the point(fourtunately i dont have to :))

I always hoped Merc would never enter that market... but it might be a smart move for them. Currently it would have no competition, unless Bimmer brings the X4 far down market to compete with a B/C-class SUV-Coupe thing. However, then they should just name it an X2. Anyway, it might be a smart move for Merc to capitalize on those sales before the competition even if it is a horrendous pointless car.

All you BMW fan boys saying x6 sales were beyond expectations are delusional or paid BMW shills. Most stealers here in so-cal are willing to give $10,000 off any x6 and most dealers are so in the red they are mostly offering 0.9 financing even on 2011 M s.

the US is not the X6's primary market , in Europe second hand X6 go for almost the price of new ones. there are a lot of them on the streets. of course the vast majority are diesels which i don't think are sold in the US. http://www.egmcartech.com/2010/04/30/bmw-x4-is-under-consideration-after-x6-success/
