Could offer petrol power

Spy photographers have caught Volkswagen's single cab Amarok undergoing testing near the Nürburgring.

Snapped undisguised, the single cab Amarok is essentially a basic version of the dual cab Amarok. Styling changes are minor but include a longer truck bed and a lengthened B-pillar which conceals additional storage capacity behind the front seats.

While nothing is official, the primary engine will be a 2.0-liter four-cylinder TDI with 120 kW (161 hp / 163 PS) and 400 Nm (295 lb-ft) of torque. Regardless, speculation seems to suggest a 2.0-liter four-cylinder flex-fuel petrol may also be offered. This would be important for the Brazilian market, where ethanol is a big seller. The single cab could also be introduced with an automatic transmission - a first for the Amarok.

Look for more information to be released ahead of the truck's launch in early 2011.

I’m sure this pick-up will make Brazilian farmers very happy. A side from that, it’s just a chip work truck with VW logo.

I kinda feel like they are taking the piss when they give the lowly truck the 161hp / 295 lb-ft 2.0TDI, while N.America gets the 140-hp / 236 lb-ft of torque version only. I wonder if you could just "chip" the engine management to give you the higher ratings, from what I understand fuel economy remains unfettled. Perhaps it's that the higher output may embarrass the 3.2 V6 rated at around 240 lb-ft, I don't know... just saying can't be fragile if they are putting the higher output TDI in a farmer's truck?

Amarok is a nice music player for Linux. Too bad people will now think of a boring VW first instead of a nice piece of open source software.
