BMW sneaks 0-Series sketches into promo video?

A new promotional video for BMW has given fans more reason to believe that the company is advancing on development of a new car slotted below the 1-Series.  Dubbed by the media as the "0-Series", the car is seen in four different renderings (approx. 0:20 sec), including one shot on a designer's Wacom Cintiq pen tablet.

At about 0:14 seconds the video also appears to show the clay model of the car, as well as one pencil and charcoal drawing.

BMW is believed to be developing their first-ever front-wheel drive, a car that could share a platform with the MINI Cooper.  Though the existence of a front-wheel BMW had been questioned by brand loyalists, a recent survey by the automaker showed that 80 percent of their 1-Series customers were unaware they owned a rear-wheel drive vehicle.  Potentially, BMW could build a flexible enough platform to also be used on the Megacity, expected in 2013.

In the sketches, the car is shown as a three-seater.  Rumors suggest the sub-compact could also come to market as a five-door, and two-seat roadster.  Do not expect the "0-Series" name to make it to production, as their in-house marketing team will likely torpedo calling the vehicle a zero.

BMW is showing the video as part of their Innovation Days tour in Asia.  The tour began in mid-June in Tokyo, and will continue to Seoul and Hong Kong by mid-October.

Is it the 0er?  Let us know what you think in the comments below.

If that clay model is a 0 series, it's no hatchback, looks more like a coupe.

They don't need this under the name of BMW if they want to keep reputation of a strong premium brand.

I have a question... BMW owns rolls royce motor. and rolls royce makes jet engines aswell. So BMW owns every thing or just the car company?

bmw owns the rights to the rolls royce name for cars only. the jet engine manufacturer is completely separate and unrelated.

From what I understand, back in the day, VW and BMW were trying to 1-up each other when RR and Bentley were up for sale. VW had more cash so ended up with the winning bid. Throughout all this, once the purchase was finalized, it was revealed that RR motor only owned 2 plants as assets, but NOT the name "Rolls Royce", which was owned by the jet company. RR didn't want VW to have the RR and Bentley brands, having wanted BMW to purchase them. At the time, Pietche was hell-bent on getting them. After the sale, it was revealed that VW had only purchased both plants, for a sum of around $700m. RR jet engines then turned around and sold the name to BMW for about $70m. Needless to say, someone at VW was fired in the aftermath. Pietche was furious, and decided that he wanted to both outsell and "outbrand" the BMW RR, which is how the Continental redesign came into being (for outselling) and why Bugatti has so much horsepower (for outbranding). ...There is a book about the whole debacle, I am sure you can find it on amazon. I am sure there are somethings I am missing here and if anyone has more to add or correct, please feel free.. Love, Narco.

if it were a "0" series just as a Fwd MINI equivalent with gasoline engine, it really sounds cheap as a BMW. it it were a "0" series, zero emission vehicle, then it seems more appropriate. if people want a front engine FWD BMW, they already know where to go: MINI.

Those four sketches at 0:20 are different concepts for 5-series GT.

I hope they don't do an "0" series...the "1" is bad enough...BMW needs to focus on a "top dog"...everybody has one, Mercedes has the SLS,Porsche has the Carrera GT,Lexus just did the LFA,which I didn't expect....Come on with the BIG DOG!!!!
