Toyota chief test driver killed on Nurburgring accident with BMW prototype [video]

Chief test engineer killed

An accident, on local roads near the Nurburgring, has claimed the life of legedary Toyota chief test engineer / driver, Hiromu Naruse.

While details are limited, the 67-year old was piloting a Lexus LFA Nurburgring Edition when it crashed into a BMW 3-Series. Both cars were traveling in an area with a speed limit of 100 km/h (62 mph), but the crash was violent enough that Naruse's body had be pulled from the wreckage with the 'Jaws of Life' (aka rescue scissors). Two test drivers, age 34 and 33 years old, in the BMW were also injured, with one in critical condition.

Naruse started his career with Toyota in 1963, when he joined the Vehicle Evaluation and Engineering Division. Over the years, he played in important role in developing the Toyota 2000GT and the Lexus LFA.

It is as simple as it is ironic that the creation kills it's creator. But in a sense of "it all must come to an end" I'd say that it is somewhat a privlege to die while enjoying something you love to do. And anyone dare say anything about BMW being a safer car and LFA isn't. We don't know what happened at the moment of the accident and how the cars ended up the way they did... I like BMW's but this is not the topic for that. Very sad...

Relax, that would be silly. On the side note, that is a horrible sad tragedy. At-least the guy did get to live to a pretty good age of 67. Would be even worst if the 2 in the other 2 got killed. Sad news.

Wow, is that a hearse on the scene?! It's unfortunate that major insurance crash testings are done to cars that lots of people can afford and buy. That leaves most exotics pretty much untested and leave the safety of exotics mostly unknown. Anyway, I guess this is the first LFA crash, then.

RIP Lexus trying to change its world image from luxury-fake sedans to full carbon fiber supercars. Then people show up praising it. Why? because it looks beautiful. so superficial. this is my answer for that guy who started defending this car. Yes you are reading this Narco.

Very unfortunate... hard to figure out how they managed a head-on collision. Interesting slip by the rescue crew. While describing the accident, Mr. Schmitt called the yellow car a Nissan Lexus a couple of times...

A Sad day for all car fans today R.I.P to Mr. Hiromu Naruse and I hope the ocupants in the bmw have a quick recovery. Please guys, spare everyone any idiotic comment, this is not the time. The "fat guy's" work is not to know the brand of the car its to save lives so please remember that before calling him a "fail" Respect

have to agree. the policeman has something more to know the how a car is named. It will be really interesting, how it comes to such an accident. they are professional Testdrivers at open roads, so what can be the reason to take such a mistake in driving?! sad thing, I wish the best for the injured men and r.i.p. Mr. Naruse.

It's quite obvious that speed was a factor, to cause that kind of damage, no matter what car you drive, you'd be killed or seriously injured. Have no idea why the lexus was speeding on a side street like that. too bad though. the LF-A was and is an amzing piece of machinery.

Respect for fellow engineer Naruse. May he rest in Peace. Carbon fiber is probably not the best material for crash protection, although it makes for a fast car.

u obviously are lacking some knowledege...let me enlighten u, there's a reason why F1 cars use carbon fiber, that is, it dissipates the forces generated by impact better than any other material which keeps the drivers safer.

 Joe_Limon Joe_Limon
really? damn, here I thought it was used in racecars because it was light weight and strong... though I'm not quite sure why the LFA is as heavy as the 3 series it hit...

@jerry, Thx for the info, I will research it more. I was under the impression that carbon fiber has the propensity to shatter under impact, but I guess it depends just how much force is in the impact.

RIP to one of my favorite Drivers-May you live on to test more cars in the afterlife! but how did Naruse die from that crash? It doesn't look that brutal, and he was wearing a helmet...plus the A pillar of the BMW is still intact.
