Abarth confirm two-seater coupe - rendered

Abarth plans to launch its first self-branded car in nearly four decades, according to the Italian firm's sales and marketing chief Antonio Labate.  In an interview with Autocar, Labate said the two-seat sports car could hit showrooms by 2012.

The Fiat-owned brand is believed to be developing a mid-engined roadster, like the archived rendering seen here, though Labate says the car will be a coupe.  If it makes it to market, the car could weigh under 900 kg, but have an engine that kicks out over 240 horsepower (179 kW / 243 PS).  That means that, despite having a similar weight as the Abarth 500, it could be more than 80 percent more powerful.

Wow.

“The brand is doing so well we will definitely bring our own standalone Abarth coupe model to market within the next two years," Labate said.  We can't wait.

That car looks pretty sweet. Glad its coming from the Italians and not Koreans. More cars should head this direction. Less power and less weight over more power and more weight is the way to go.

This is great news! I hope they sell it in the US alongside the 500, which is coming later this year.

Looks like Abarth purchased Project Kimber from McLaren and has decided to update it. Good for them. A small coupe is what the market clamors for.

I have no idea what this means. McLaren had nothing to do with Project Kimber. And that project hoped to buy the Smart Roadster from Daimler and badge it as an MG, although when NAIC refused to talk they then inked a deal to sell it as an AC with a Mistibishi engine. There are a whole heap of brand names you could have used around Project Kimber but McLaren and Abarth are not two of them.

Anything mid engine and under ?30k gets a huge thumbs up from me. First the MR2, then NSX and now this...my car ownership history is definitely leaning towards mid-engined 2 seaters!

Wow, over 240bhp and under 900kg - the power-to-weight ratio will be at least 267bhp/tonne. This ought to be a potent little car.

looks fine, too bad it's Italian. You see, it could properly work for the first 2 or 3 months... and then you must sell it away before it catches fire out of nowhere.

It would appear stereotypes die hard. Fiat has been turning over a new leaf in quality recently. No they're not Audi, but in reliability surveys cars like the Panda are high scorers. My 3-year-old Grande Punto hasn't ignited yet, and I've had it since October.

If it's priced right and it gets a proper manual gearbox and minimal electronics, I might consider one!
