2012 BMW 3-Series hits the ring for first time

Spies in Germany caught a new series of photos featuring the next-generation BMW 3-Series.  Though the car is seen with loads of camouflage and dummy equipment, we do get a few ideas of what the 2012 model year 3er will show off.

The F30 3-Series Sedan is expected to have a longer wheelbase than the current E90 model, possibly stretched out to 2.8-meters (110.2-inches) in length.  This would continue the BMW trend, where every successive 3-Series generation has a longer wheelbase than the previous.  This aspect of the car may be countered with shorter overhangs, though it is hard to tell what is real and what is padding on the prototype.

On this car, the connection between the rear windscreen and the rear end looks a bit smoother, and less bold than the notch on the E90.  We can only hope that the cute fuzzy teddybear sunshade will come standard on the car.

Little is known about the range of engines for the car, though the M3 is expected to make use of a straight-six turbocharged engine producing 450 horsepower (336 kW / 456 PS).  BMW will likely make their new eight-speed automatic transmission available on the car, as well as a six-speed manual.  Helping speed things along should be EfficientDynamics equipment, which could be standard on the M-Badged car, and built into the M-Sports package for the 3er.  Aside from stop/start, regenerative braking, and active aerodynamics, the car could also see a solar roof, and a powertrain pre-heating system.

The 2012 BMW 3-Series Sedan should hit the European market in 2011, with a release in the US soon after.  The 3er Touring model is likely to come out in 2013.

Lol, the car is camouflaged so much, you really have no idea what the bumper will look like. Its to early to tell anything yet. I think we will start to see more uncovering towards 2011. I think they are making the wheelbase longer because they want the 1 series to stand out more. Just hope it does not approach 5 series territory.

Nobody, I repeat nobody, say anything negative about BMW or BavarianMS will swoop in for the kill!

Do you ever have anything to add to an article? Did you even read it? I have not seen you comment anywhere but BMW articles. With absolutely nothing to add. Just random garbage spewed from your mouth. Do you also own 30 cars in your garage like the STI fanboy? When you have something worth discussing to add, comeback then.

BavarianMS is a fanboy for a reason. BMW is amazing. Why would someone get mad at someone for liking something amazing?

Im a fan yes. Fanboy? no. Fan-boys are those who don't really know what they are talking about. Some people just like to give BMW this negative stereotype that it does not deserve. I like it for what it is, not what its not. Don't buy em for the badge but for what they deliver. There are lots of fanboy haters who are really full of themselves that keep spreading garbage around. Oh yeah, some also claim to own 30 cars. The 911 is also one of my all time favorites. I like cars from many different makes and don't mind discussing any of them.

A fanboy is someone with an obsessive interest in a particular thing - usually a company - that won't accept negativity aimed at it. Because of this interest, they find out as much as they can about the company, and thus they do know what they're on about, although not often from experience - I don't know how relevant that is to you, that's just my experience. Fanboys are obviously interested in the area surruonding it as well (e.g. X-Box 360 fanboys - my least favourite kind - are fans of video games, not just X-Box), but they have a very clear favourite. It is only on BMW articles that you're like this with long angry/defensive comments, often blowing hot air rather than making a point. You say some people only comment on BMW articles, but click on their username and see that this isn't the case. For instance, 997-GT500-STI has commented on a variety of articles and hasn't shown any clear fanboyism (that I've picked up on, at least). So cool your jets. And McNamara, please don't wind him up. It means everyone has to scroll down further. (Yes, I realise that's an ironic thing for me to put in this long comment, but it's true nonetheless) Anyway, to refer to the original comment, it does look a bit cheap. But you can't trust prototype bodywork, especially if it's too early for it to even have proper head/tail lights. Cynical me thinks BMW will be conservative with the design of this high-volume car. After polarising so many people with most of the outgoing generation of BMWs, their new language seems to be a sort of dulled-down Bangle. Still lots of creases, etc., but not so... controversial.

Um lets just put it this way. I don't care if someone talks down on something. As long as they use more than 3 words to do it and back up their information. The comment function is to discuss cars not people. Oh yeah, to 997-GT500-STI dude. I really would like to see the 30 cars you say you own. You can send me a link with proof. Untill then, I own a Veyron and an Enzo.

Doesn't look like a brand new model, rather major facelift following 7-series. And a matter of longer wheelbase is not a problem on existing platform. Extending series cars is getting more and more popular on chinese market.

If this remark is regarding my person, I have to say that now I'm starting to have some doubts ;P I don't know what kind of posts you're expecting from me, propably I'm not as ambitious as I should and my short experince in car brand is not enough to write any here. Please be more ambitious....

was not addressed to you in fact ... this was just a useless comment to say that the car is so deeply hidden that it is hard to see it is a bmw... also to say that even if there is not much to say about those pics, there are still some people (BavarianMS and Mikeado) that can not resist fighting and arguing ... sorry for the confusion !

Oh, no offence and bad feelings anymore :) I was sure it was answer to my post. Arguing is every forum's law, there's nothing we can do. Cheers!
