Hyundai joins MINI vs Porsche PR orgy with own video challenge

Will MINI accept?

The attention seekers at MINI have some new company as Hyundai has decided to join their quest to grab headlines.

As the video shows, Hyundai has effectively offered to take Porsche's place at Road Atlanta. While the clip isn't as well made as the Rocky IV spoof, it's a cheap way for Hyundai to promote the Genesis Coupe which competes with the V6-powered Ford Mustang, Chevrolet Camaro, and Dodge Challenger.

As you may recall, MINI started this whole mess by running a full page ad in the New York Times which challenged Porsche to a race at Road Atlanta. After several rounds of prodding by former-Porsche alum and current MINI USA boss, Jim McDowell, Porsche's Detlev Von Platen responded by saying "While your challenge seems like a fun and lighthearted campaign, we'll stick to racing the way we have over the decades. We welcome you at Sebring, Le Mans, Daytona or any other sanctioned race where there is more at stake than T-shirts and valet parking spaces."

MINI apparently didn't get the message, so they rented a plane and flew a banner reading "Dear Porsche, Bring it! Love, MINI," over Porsche's North American headquarters.

Will MINI have the guts to swallow their own marketing mischief pill or will they be as wimpy as... a 75hp (56 kW / 76 PS) MINI First? Only time will tell.

@Hero Sina - I would agree with you if this was 5 years ago. But its 2010 and with a new decade, Hyundai has also shed its old skin. I think Hyundai has taken this bold challenge and flipped it on Mini. Will Mini accept or be shamed by declining?? Hyundai has class, the question is are you going to finally open your eyes and see them for what they are?

The Answer is No and i never say Yes my friend , Because even themselves don't believe they are making Classy cars , Look at Genesis , do you find any Hyundai badges ? yes one at tail , look at Equus , You can't find even one Hyundai Badge and don't say it is like what Toyota done with Lexus because it isn't. So it makes me wondering why they didn't put Hyundai logo on those cars? 1.The cars are so awful and Hyundai is ashamed of them which is incorrect. 2.The cars are too good to be Hyundai and somehow the cars are ashamed to be a Hyundai which makes more sense than first logic , Did i say something really crazy?

This is getting ridiculous. At least Mini had the respect to make Porsche look advanced. Hyundai is just being cocky. "Hyundai...Like Sunday" Wtf? Is this even a real video? I hope Mini does it, otherwise they will look really wimpy. As for Porsche, I know a lot of people who would love to see a One on One with a 911 against a GT-R, If there was a challenge from Nissan, then there's gonna be some fighting words.

Oh please. MINI and Hyundai both need to shut their faces. MINI will never be a Porsche, and Porsche has better things to do, like win real races, and Hyundai has, and will probably always have, an inferiority complex that no amount of warranty or will ever make up for. Hyundai needs to concentrate on dynamics, interior quality, and originality before they start doing call outs.

Mini and Hyundai could BOTH beat a Porsche in a race, and I wouldnt give a s h i t. Id much rather have a Porsche, so go for it Mini and Hyunai.

Hyundai wants attention now. Hyundai has a Sweet Ass Accent coming that will put MINi to shame. Hyundai will eventually want to race MINi with this New Accent and when they do they dont want it to be such a shock for people for the Accent to race MINI. So if they race it against Genesis First, then MINI VS Accent wouldnt be so controversial its a no no. That's what I would do.

Come back to reality dude, when has someone besides yourself been hot and bothered by an Accent?..People that probably don't know any better and don't care that the engine and chassis technology is a generation or two behind, but, hey it has a good warranty. And the MINI is in the premium compact segment, Hyundai would have to call it the Genesis Hatch.

I would, but it would probably be the Kia Forte Koup, and not the Genesis. The design just isn't my taste... frankly I think it looks horrid... Though it may have beat the Mustang and various other muscle cars, I'd still rather have the latter.
