Mercedes SLS AMG started development as next-gen Dodge Viper
Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG - 22.01.2010

SLS AMG and a new Viper were in co-development for a while

A neat little creation story here for the automotive history books.

It turns out that a few years back when Mercedes-Benz was working on what was then thought to be called the SLC (now the SLS AMG), a prototype model spotted testing in Death Valley, California with Dodge body panels was, in fact, a next-generation Dodge Viper. (Didn't we mention this resemblance recently?)

According to Inside Line, Dodge was indeed working on a new Viper when then corporate partner Daimler got involved in the project to use it to co-develop the SLS. Later, the Viper side of the development was dropped when Chrysler got into financial trouble.

Dodge engineers got as far as building an aluminum chassis for the model as well as creating a new suspension.

Now they may get the chance to get back to where they left off and complete the new Viper for a resurgent Dodge brand that will become the performance-oriented division of the post-bankruptcy Chrysler.

Chrysler got into financial trouble because Diamler was stealing chrysler profits to improve the merc lineup.

Chrysler was going down , that's why they were bought by Daimler in the first place.

I'm "amazed" by people (mainly American) still think Chrysler was dragged down by Daimler. the fact was, Daimler thought it was a "perfect match" to acquire Chrysler & gain benefit, but turned out Chrysler wasn't an "ideal partner" & made Daimler loss lots of money, so Daimler has to file a "divoice". btw, hold your breathe, SLS is NOT a Viper. the test mule just used body panel of Viper to cover up the "top secret" back then...

Hata is a racist. He hates Americans worse than Al-Qaeda. Also why is everyone freaking out about this! Here is what happened, a Dodge Viper bent a SLR McClaren over the kitchen table one night after a few too many drinks. A short time later the SLS was born.

996 If Chrysler was going down, Diamler would have had nothing to do with them.

What's even more amazing is Mercedes' ability to build a desirable product from something so vulgar (ie. American engineering)

The viper chassis was developed before Diamler took over. And the Viper was desirable to begin with. Screw Diamler

Don't all cars wish they could be a Viper?

that's just a rumour based on the fact that the car used Viper body parts during early development. many cars use other cars' bodies , that doesn't mean they are all based on other cars.

I'm sure many of Matisse's works started off on a canvas that came from the same manufacturer as canvases that ended up having bored housewives painting on them.

Look at all the German car fanatics here freaking out. Heaven forbid the pureblood Mercedes have a little bit of Dodge in it. When people get married that's what happens, same with auto manufacturers. It's like a mixture of DNA, you need a good mix to keep the product healthy. If you just inbreed all the time and refuse to marry outside the family you end up with deformed flipper babies, abominations that should have been aborted...... take the Panamera for example.

Look at all the American car fanatics here freaking out. They believe every single rumor they read in the internet. For your information : the only Dodge part in this car was the test mule. This is a 100% AMG creation, with of course the support of Mercedes Benz and Magna Steyr. Funny thing is, I was following the development of this car since a while, never read or saw anything like that.

2 hata. I recommend to you to look at financial reports Daimler and Chrysler before to write that the German company did not use the finance of Americans. And as soon as Chrysler began to yield losses, Mercedes at once "divorced" from it. Remember also a situation with McLaren.
