Toyota trademarks FR-S badge for FT-86 concept car?
Toyota FT-86 Concept live at Tokyo Motor Show

After Toyota applied in both Canada and the U.S. to trademark the name "FR-S", many are speculating that it will be the badge for the production model of the Toyota FT-86 concept.  Some believe the term stands for "front-engine, rear-wheel-drive sports car."

Trademark applications were filed in both countries on May 27, 2010, with the name referenced under the category "Automobiles and structural parts thereof."

The FT-86 was co-developed with Subaru, and is expected to use a turbocharged 2.0-liter boxer engine from the Impreza/WRX lineup.  It is expected to generate anywhere from 160 to 308 horsepower (160-227 kW).  Rumor suggests the higher end of the engine range could be for an STi version.

The Toyota FT-86 could be released in Japan early in 2011, before a European release at €17,000.  The Subaru-badged version could cost as much as ¥3 million (€24,037).

New Toyota Celica??? Only reason I say it is for the 17,000 price tag. I know the previous one was front-wheel drive, but...

Well the name FT-86 means Future Toyota-86, a reference to the '80s Toyota AE86 Corolla, an FR-layout coup? with a cult following, so it's the spiritual successor to that, but yes, it's probably going to be in the same segment as the Celica.

So they ARE going to make it now? Last time I read about it, they were postponing the production by a couple of years. Well, if they do make it, good. No one makes a small and cheap rear-wheel driven sporty car at the moment, so this thing should sell well.
