First Korean Supercar gets ready for Launch
Spirra sportscar/supercar

The Spirra is almost here. South Korea is about to introduce its first supercar, nine years after the Proto Motors PS-II prototype was first revealed to the press. After navigating through rough seas, including being bought out by a company called the Oullim Group, Proto Motors (now Oullim Motors) is confident of a 2010 summer market introduction.

Maximum power will come from a 2.7 liter V6 Hyundai sourced motor with four different outputs. At its meekest, it will produce 129kW (173 bhp/ 175 PS) and torque of 245 Nm (181 lb-ft) at 6,000rpm. The second configuration features a small turbo that helps it push 243 kW (325 bhp / 330 PS) and 471 Nm (347 lb-ft). At the third-highest level is a power output of between 294 kW (395 bhp/ 400 PS) and 309 kW (414 bhp/ 420 PS), assisted by a bigger turbo. Peak torque for this engine is 490 Nm (361 lb-ft).

The most powerful of them all is persuaded by two turbos encouraging between 331 kW (444 bhp/ 450 PS) and 368kW (493 bhp/ 500 PS). The maximum torque is 539 Nm (398 lb-ft). Drive is through the rear wheels via a 6-speed manual gearbox. At its quickest it goes from 0 - 100 km/h in 3.5 seconds. Top speeds range from 212 km/h to 310 km/h.

Road grip is provided by 225/40R 19 front and 275/40R 19 rear tyres. The Spirra has a mid-engine layout and is constructed by hand.

The body is made from carbon fibre, enclosing a tubular spaceframe. It is all lightweight but very stiff at the same time. The Korean auto industry does not yet have a well-developed supercar heritage and as such, these manufacturing technologies are not common for the general market.

Overview

  • Ultra stiff tubular spaceframe structure

  • Lightweight full carbonfiber bodywork

  • Midengine layout for optimum weight bias

  • Bespoke handcrafted assembly

  • Genuine racing technology adapted for road use

  • Lightweight, high performance V6 Turbo engines

History in brief

The history of the Spirra dates back to the beginning of the 1990s when Han-chul Kim and his wife Ji-sun Choi, both talented automotive experts, quit their jobs in leading Korean car companies to establish ‘Proto Motors’.

Proto Motors was an automotive R&D firm specializing in developing advanced automotive concepts with industry clients and soon after settling down as a startup, ideas for a domestic developed supercar started to blossom.

Over several years, what began as an enthusiastic set of ideas developed into a full blown development project. In 2001, the ‘PS-II’ prototype was presented to the press with full commitment to bring it into production.

The difficulties in establishing a small scale, hand built production line of such exotic cars in an industry purely adapted to mass production was so great, the project saw several crisis that would nearly force it to a halt.

In July, 2006, Dong-hyuk Park, CEO of Oullim Group established Oullim Motors, absorbed Proto Motors and reshuffled the project to keep in on course for launch. In the end, it took a decade, 4 generations of complete re-engineering, certification and rewriting of legislature to bring our dream to the road.

As of March 2010, all legislature, homologation and certification was cleared for full production. We are expecting our first cars to be delivered this summer.

Why venture into volatile territory?

The geographic distance from Europe means that the European supercar ownership experience here is quite different to what manufacturers originally intended. It is marred by limited number of servicing centers, significantly higher repair costs due to shipping parts and having to ship the entire car to Europe for extensive damage repairs. This is inconvenient regardless of cost.

As of 2009, Korea is the fifth largest car manufacturing company in the world. But despite the history and technology in the auto manufacturing sector, we never did and still don’t have a proper performance car that represents our country. Therefore, we set to establish a supercar brand of our own by introducing bespoke car manufacturing and servicing in Asia and become a permanent player in high performance Asian supercars.

Unmistakable presence

There’s no point in speed if a supercar is unable to make people’s heart race. Supercars are irrational, emotional cars and from the very first glimpse, a supercar shouldn’t look ordinary. It should look extraordinary.

A dominating presence is the key to supercar design and we worked hard to achieve a look like nothing else from Korea. A new standard to which future Korean performance cars would be judged against.

The Spirra’s design is aggressive in stance and proportion, but less aggressive in the details. This look is intended to inspire excitement, but not completely shout that it is a supercar. An elegant and natural looking supercar design was what we were looking for.

Full carbonfiber bodywork over tubular spaceframe

To meet our own performance standards, the Spirra had to be constructed as light as possible through a full carbonfiber body over a tubular spaceframe. Both are technologies beyond the realm of mass manufacturing due to high costs and difficulties in automation essential for mass manufacturing. The entire process is done by hand by our team of professional craftsmen and mechanics.

The benefits from all this effort is a very light and stiff construction which is useful for responsive high performance capabilities as well as providing superior impact protection to match the performance the Spirra is capable of. This type of technology is adapted from racing for the road and is a completely a unique approach to vehicle development compared to the existing Korean auto industry.

V6 Turbo engines for superior power to weight ratio

The stiff lightweight construction meant that we could rely less on the engine’s power

for performance to become a more efficient kind of performance machine. During development, the engine was changed from a naturally aspirated V8 for a turbocharged V6.

This would keep the engine’s weight down to a minimum and still provide V8 levels of power as well as being kinder to the environment. Combining the lightweight construction with our turbocharged V6 results in an astonishing 2.4Kg/HP power to weight ratio.

This design not only yields very quick straightline performance, it absolutely dominates in the corners with less weight to throw around. Extra grip is provided by 225/40R 19 front tires and 275/40R 19 rear tires.

Motorsports proven performance and engineering

Many of the technologies incorporated in the Spirra are derived from racing technology. The Spirra was developed with serious performance in mind and in order to make sure this design is completely functional, racing was part of the car’s development program.

We took one of our prototypes with minimal homologation changes to race in the domestic GT Masters Championship taking two consecutive wins against such rivals as fully race prepared Porsche 911 GT3 RSRs, BMW M3s and Nissan 350Zs.

Experience from racing was applied back in our roadcar development by improving various aspects of the car such as suspension tuning, engine mapping and cooling.

Sophisticated Craftsmanship to ensure quality and precision

The same design principle applies to the interior where one can find full leather treatment throughout to maintain a high quality feel but without inhibiting the joy of driving. The driving feel is a higher priority than speed or luxury. The interior is designed to retain that balance between luxury and function.

Each Spirra is completely hand assembled by our team of professional craftsmen and mechanics in our dedicated production line. This production method ensures that each car meets our strict requirements in quality and precision.

The Spirra is our first of many future generations of supercars. Therefore, our efforts are concentrated in ensuring that our standards meet the expectation of our clients who are eagerly awaiting to be among the first to sit behind the wheel.

one car that ranges from 129 - 331 kw? so pricing on a car that would look the same would be $45 000 - $250 000. lol usually a "supercar" has 1 or 2 specs of engine as to not cheapen the appearance of the specific model. oh well, im sure they know what their doing :D maybe if the 331kw car could sell for $80 000 that would be aggresive marketing. if its only engine specs that differ why not. There is nothing "SUPER" about this supercar. Most people could just buy an NSX if they want that look. Plus imagine getting embarrassed by other non super-cars that pack a better punch.

Right because when we want to assess the performance potential of a 3 Series BMW we look only at the 4 cylinder 320i instead of an M3.

B(M)S, yup, you're right, there is nothing special about 3.5s 0-100kph. What is "super"car then? I suspect every BMW is a supercar in your opinion, even though they have never created any super car at all, lolz

0-60 in 3.5 seconds is nothing to be sniffed at. In fact that's around the benchmark for high-end supercars. Yes the 175HP version will be slower, but it's light, perhaps comparable to an Elise rather than a Cayman or a Ferrari? Offering more choices appeals to more customers, of different incomes.

Nothing Special about taking a Hyundai Azera Engine, which this car has despite the fact that the article doesnt state that it does, and make it get 400 HP, right? Yeah sure, buddy.

This Car Weighs 2425 lb. Do you know what that is? It weighs less than the Accent hatch. Its about the same weight as an i20.

their top of the line one might have something going on in performance, how long it would last would trouble me though.

Well Bavarian, 500HP out a Granny Car Engine like Azera from a hole in the wall Korean Supercar company of course Aided by HKAG (They should buy them out) assisted with twin turbos should be no joke.

The interior is laden with the most premium leather, suede, etc... They really did a good job. I read about it in a Korean Magazine, and then did an Article on my Accent planet site about it.

To me, this looks like a car taken from GTA 4 where you know roughly what its suppose to be, but the game designers have altered parts of the design or taken elements of design from other cars and applied it to make some weird, chav tastic modifing job look a like. It has the front of a Tesla, the rear window from an audi r8, rear lights from a koeinigsegg, the emblem from a proton, and the profile kind of reminds me of a ferrari 430. Come to think of it, i'm sure i've seen this car in GTA 4!

I don't think there is anything comparable to the Honda NSX, not the styling or the handling capabilities. However, apart from the look of the front of this thing, I do have high hopes on this car. I just hope that it gets an NA engine not a turbocharged one.

...rather generic styling though attractive. Definitely the union of an NSZ & a Lotus. Some may laugh but it will probably sell in the Korean/Asian markets.

So it ranges from sports car up to supercar. Pick the fastest one that a) you can afford or b) can handle. I remember using the Proto Motors Spirra on Gran Turismo 4, and didn't think it was that bad. I prefer it without that handlebar moustache on the back though. The worrying bit is the "hand made in Korea". I hope their people are better than their robots... What's all this instant dislike? I bet if this were an up-start British sports car, most people would be a bit more open minded to it. I wish people could ignore what nationality a new car/company has sometimes...

Something tells me that a near 500hp "supercar" may have trouble selling, when there is a 173hp mere "sporty" version that looks exactly the same, getting embarrassed by a 20 year old Toyota MR2 Turbo. I am not saying that it cant be a good car. What I AM saying is that, at least in the US, nobody will want a 500hp class "supercar", knowing that it is also sold as a soft, 173hp, "sporty" car. Would you buy a 173hp Enzo? How about a Veyron 2.0T? It would be like an S600 alongside a stripped S-Class with none of the luxury, sold with a 2.0L diesel 4-cyl, at a C-Class price point. Would anyone buy the 600? If the 173hp version is to go against Lotus, then excellent! Just sell the higher hp versions as "special" versions.
