New Astra VXR / OPC to receive 300bhp
2010 Opel Astra OPC hatchback sketch - 1024 - 08.07.2009

On sale next year

According to a recent report, the Opel Astra OPC / Vauxhall Astra VXR will finally become a legitimate competitor to the Ford Focus RS.

While details are limited, Autocar is reporting the high performance Astra will feature a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with 300 hp (224 kW / 304 PS). If they are correct, the new engine will boast 63 hp (47 kW / 64 PS) more than its predecessor.

Unlike the Insignia OPC / VXR, the Astra will continue to be front-wheel driven. This means GM will likely equip the car with an electronic differential to help alleviate torque steer.

Expected to go on sale in late 2011, the hot hatch will likely wear an aggressive body kit with revised bumpers, flared wheel arches, and a roof-mounted spoiler.

300hp, nice oh wait, Front Wheel Drive? Can the Hi-Per Strut handle it? Even more horrific understeer like the old one?

ok... Mazda or no Mazda I still love the Astra GTC/OPC, and I'm talking about the current one... and I can't wait till the next generation will hit the streets (hopefully not the trees alongside the streets)! I agree with the FWD problem, be cause you can have a 500 hp engine but if you don't have an appropriate chassis to transfer all that power to the road, you'll just have a very expensive corn/rubber mill (but at least you'll have a nice, very fine and useless rubber flour :))

"If Ford can do it, so can we!" When Ford did it they didn't just add an electric LSD, they used clever suspension. And it still torque-steers, even if understeer is reduced. Maybe you'll be able to parallel park the Astra VXR II by reversing the rear into place, then just pulling the handbrake and flooring it in 1st. Let the torque-steer do the rest.

Excited, but worried at the same time. If Vauxhall can pull it off like Ford did with the Focus RS, then well done. If they can't, it is gonna be tyre shredding machine.

Ok, compact-segment car, over 300 bhp but I'm sure it's gonna weight a lot. Would be a good idea to follow Insignia OPC 4 wheel drive. We'll se when it's officialy confirmed. I'm wooried about vitality of such powerful 2-liter engine.
