Hyundai may be sizing up how its model holds its own against the competition

Here are some more shots from our intrepid spy photographers of the Hyundai Veloster doing some real-world testing on the roads of Europe and standing right next to what will be its chief competitor - the VW Scirocco.

Now, it's interesting to speculate as to what exactly Hyundai is up to here during this latest testing run. Are they comparing how the Veloster holds up in a tête-à-tête against the Scirocco? It seems so.

The Veloster will first be introduced with a 1.6 liter engine with 90 kW (122 PS) and 155 Nm of torque (114 lb-ft). But to go up against the more muscular Scirocco variants (notwithstanding the Scirocco R) it will need the 1.6 liter turbocharged variant Hyundai has promised with 131 kW (177 PS). A twin-clutch transmission may also be in the works, although that has not been confirmed by the Korean automaker.

The Hyundai Veloster is set to make its debut at the Paris motor show in September. The model will go on sale in Europe sometime in 2011.

That VW Scirocco looks mean & sexy in black but the hyundai is coming up closer to that design of VW.

Hyundai has their work cut out for them if they are to be a competitor to the Scirocco. They will also need to emulate the interior quality of the Scirocco as well.

So they cant build their own car, they have to literally copy someone else's. And thats why I will never own a Hyundai.

Every manufacturer in the world tests their cars directly against the intended competitors; it has nothing to do with copying. Grow up.

I'm not sure if Hyundai can step up and compete against VW, Toyota maybe okay, but VW, it's out of their league. They shoulda wait a couple of years to get the quality higher

I agree, vut remember- for over a decade they have made FAR cheaper cars than the best in their segmants, and quality has slowly, but with resolve climbed to the point where their cars are about as good as Toy.'s but, to be honest ARE a tad more exciting. They won't match VW. NOT YET, but lets look at this veloster 3-4 gen. down the road. Not a fan of Korean cars, but one cannot deny that if only due to their work ethic, the fact that they ACTUALLY care about after-sales service (at least here they do), and the fact that they stick to their core values, whilst improving their products ONE STEP AT a time, with each model, deserves MUCH respec.
