BMW working on 3-Series LWB - report
2009 BMW 3-series Facelift

Extended wheelbase 3-Series will be built at new Chinese plant

Are long wheelbase variants turning into a big trend in China?

Well, at least for the segment in which the 3-Series competes there, BMW feels the need to offer a long-wheelbase variant to go up against the successful Audi A4L - the extended wheelbase version of the A4 model.

BMW will be building the stretched variant of the 3-Series at a new plant in the Shengyang economic zone with its Chinese partner Brilliance Auto. The plant, scheduled to be built in 2012, will have a capacity of 100,000 units and will also be used to manufacture the X1, according to Brilliance chairman Qi Yu Min.

The new plant will give BMW/Brilliance a capacity of 300,000 units per year with most of the parts sourced locally (60 percent). BMW/Brilliance hope to increase sales in China to 120,000 units annually by 2012, meaning that the additional capacity may well be used to export vehicles to markets outside of the country.

Brilliance is also said to want a production plant to build MINI models in China too.

Could someone explain the Chinese need for long wheel base (=more rear legroom) cars? The Chinese are on average much smaller then for example the average German!

I have been to china... and i can tell that the bmws , Audis and Mercs are used by executives.... so even the person with a 3er or a4 or c class has a driver... so they are lookin for more legroom in the car if they are paying twice the price of an accord...

I'm also wondering what the quality difference will be of a Chinese built Brilliance BMW and a German built BMW. Years ago there was a comparison between the Mexican built VW Golf/Rabbit and the German built VW Golf. The German VW proved to be much more reliable and had a better built quality. Same parts, same machines, same manufacture, so the cars should be identical...strange...

i dont know where they were tested but if one was tested in mexico and other was tested in Germany... that would make a lot of difference...i mean the road conditions and the weather...But if it was the same place... i can see your point...

I owned a 98 Passat built in Mexico and it was so bad VW bought it back from me on the agreement I get another VW. My service adviser said whatever you do just look at the tag and get one built in Germany because the Mexico cars are crap. The German built GTI I ended up with was a flawless little tank and never saw the mechanic. I think that has changed but it does go to show that it makes a difference.

this is kind of funny that people are still questioning the quality when products carried "made in china" badge. please look around, do you people realize how many things around us are made in china? even Apple, HP, Dell, HTC, Canon, Nikon, Sony, Samsung...etc, are all made in China these days! so, stop living in the past & leave stupid comments. Audi & VW wwere the earliest automakers start joint venture with Chinese automaker, i don't see there is any quality problem! no like those cars made in USA, even Mercedes, Toyota, when they leave them in the hands of Americans, quality went down hill big time!

The American Auto industry ( notably General Motors and Ford ) have made dramatic strides in quality standards. For proof--The Ford Fusion has consistently won comparison tests and has recieved many awards. ) Unlike Toyota's Prius, you don't see any American hybrid cars being recalled do you? no you don't. While it took GM to go bankrupt to get its act together, give them credit where credit is due. They're finally making some good cars ( the Buick LaCrosse. the upcoming Regal to name a few ). Ford's updated Mustang is universally loved for its handling and power, almost as good as the mighty BMW M3, according to Motor Trend. As a family member of a BMW owning family ( currently 4 BMW's in the stable and the family having owned 8 since 1994 ), I can tell you that BMW HQ will be very stringent in maintaining the German quality of their BMW's. China, on the other hand, have a well earned reputation for building poorly constructed products. This is due to the Chinese government not having any standard tests and quality control. Witness the news about the baby formula and the drywall construction fiasco's. The Chinese automobile industry is in its infancy stage and it will be a very long time before you will see a Chinese made car being reliable. It will come no doubt but not without the help of American, German and Japanese car companies assisting. China is experiencing rapid growth and good for them but they do not produce the world's best products. America can compete and does produce quality products. The Germans, though, do have the mantel and do produce some of the worlds best products.

*sigh* No BMW. no. it's a SPORT SEDAN (and the ultimate driving machine), made to be small and quick, not long. if they need more legroom, theyll cough up the money for a 5er

ppl in china dont buy german cars for "sports" ... they buy it for the the German Status... i do not see any problem with companies going LWB for a market ... they are not forcing you to buy it... they are just adapting to the market conditions... its the part of product development in marketing... McDonalds does this in every country... you cant buy a hamburger in India coz they dont eat meat... its Called "Business"

Should I feel shame? Shouldn't you or I not feel shame if we oppose it? Why not take a chair sit down and watch this market as others here.

And what next ? 1-Series Long or X6 Li? The most worrying is that a few manufacturers planning to build cars in China. In a couple of years Jag's, Land Rover's, BMW's or maybe even Mercedes cars will have a plate Made in China. How would you feel one morning looking at the mirror and say : Oh yeah I have a Jag. It was made in China. L

Look, both BMW and Mercedes area already well known to have plan on several countries. So making a car in China is not a whole lot different, though some peopel may worry about the quality, however seems the German's discipline value is still there (quality test). BMW, MB and Volvo even has plan on Thailand, even S350 is build on Indonesia for South East Asia market and tehre is no downgrade there (although the price is around 10-20% off).

When I look at the 3 series photograph above, I get flashbacks of E36 and E46 owners that have to pay an arm and a leg for maintenance and parts. Hopefully made in china would mean more affordable BMW servicing & repairs.
