The not so mini MINI

According to a recent report, MINI is working on a seven-seat crossover.

While details are limited, AutoExpress talked to MINI's head of brand management, Dr Wolfgang Armbrecht, who stated "We could take the [Countryman's] wheelbase from 2.60 meters (102.4 inches) to around 2.70 meters (106.3 inches)." This would enable the crossover (tentatively dubbed the Countryman Plus) to complete with the Nissan Qashqai+2 and traditional MPVs like the Volkswagen Touran.

No word on when to expect an introduction, but MINI is probably eyeing a successful launch in North America where consumers are used to large crossovers. Case in point, the 2.70 meters (106.3 inches) wheelbase of the seven-seat Countryman Plus is 0.2 meters (6.2 inches) shorter than the wheelbase of the five-seat Chevrolet Equinox.

As we have previously reported, MINI is also working on a production version of the Beachcomber concept. Expected to wear the Moke moniker, when released, the Jeep Wrangler-like crossover will feature removable doors and a canvas roof.

Where exactly is BMW group taking Mini? This seems to be the question BMW needs to answer for all of it's divisions - they're getting lost in expansion without seemingly thinking about the effects of watering down of the brand with too many vehicle choices. BMW is quickly becoming the 21st century's version of GM.

BMW is thinking volume & profit. The same platform will underpin the Mini crossover & the BMW 1 series crossover...

Stupid idea.... What would you conceder an SUV in this car when it is as small as a pot hole? I think its off-road capability will be rubbish!!!

I think the BMW has lost the Mini heritage and sense. The Mini should be like Mini , agree with Cabrio and Clubman but other conversions and bodies like SUV, Crossover or Estate is just rubish. Spoils the badge and the brand

Well, a MINI MPV... what about a MINI Tractor, and a motorbike, or perhaps a bus while you're at it.... come on BMW, don't destroy the MINI brand please!

Looks interesting actually. I've always liked the Cooper as part of the Mini brand but I don't mind at all with BMW extending the range to other vehicles. Its a great company is Mini and I'm all for new cars from the brand.

BMW seems to have absolutely no idea what the word "Mini" even means. It's just four letters inside a winged badge that they put on their cynically concieved fashion items to sell to orange people with a penchant for shiny things. I cannot think of this brand as being related to the REAL Mini. If it were built by the principles of the 51-year-old stroke of genius it would be competing with Aygos or Fiat 500s, and it would be cheap, utilitarian motoring for the masses. Simple to build, simple to fix, wheels in the corners, good basic fun on the road. Every new BMW Mini model that isn't the (hideously overpriced) hatchback or cabrio annoys me greatly. This gets off lightly for just being a +2 version of an existing car, but it is even less of a Mini. And just designed for people who can't afford a proper BMW.

Actually it is both genius and stupid. Genius because currently Mini has become a well known established brand after its suffering in 80-90s and has many choice for customer. Positioning Mini with Avygo and its club will not make this brand better. I mean more cheap plastic as other cars on that segment have and Mini is never a practical car. Fiat 500 and Twingo, both are still quite practical, but mini design is just a joke if you talk about practicality. So that is the reason for BMW to put Mini brand on overpriced and unique positioning (look now A1 and Mito are approaching Mini's direction). Mentioning the stupidity of diluting Mini brand image, yes it really will bring some impact. However, still not sure about how far the drawback will be offset by the growing of Mini brand. Also never expect a 7 seater Mini is really for 7 persons, it is more about a Mini with bigger and usable boot. This new Mini product can be a new choice for people who want a car with bigger boot for their shopping bag as Mini countryman is more likely to target people who want to drive a "SUV" like on city without worrying every penny goes into fuel.

The current Mini may not be very practical, but the original one certainly was. 80% of an old Mini was the interior space, where People and Things go. But people out-grew it (in size rather than maturity), and a car of that size wouldn't be as big on the inside anymore because they'd have to fill it up with massive plush seats, safety devices and commodities like a/c, an iPod connector, etc. So OK, not necessarily Aygo sized, but like the slightly bigger City Cars - cars such as the Ford Ka/Fiat 500, Renault Twingo, Suzuki Swift. With better packaging than it has now. And the same great driving ability, although it won't need as big an engine because it's smaller and lighter. Which is better for the environment (I am thus seeing no flaw with my new Mini :D). But I'm talking strictly the hatchback here. Well, maybe the convertible too. I don't care what reasoning people give me, I think all the plus-size BMW Minis can either be re-badged and re-designed or be wiped off the face of the Earth.
