New G-Class gets third facelift in four years will likely premiere this fall at the Paris motor show

Inarguably not the most stylish Benz around these days, news is that the G-Class is due for more updates next year.

According to Autoevolution sources, the G-Wagen, as it is referred to in German, will be getting its third update in four years following a minor facelift in 2007. The new 2011 model is due for an introduction this September, most likely at the Paris auto show.

Exterior re-touches will be subtle while the interior gets the appropriate upgrade to keep up with Mercedes-Benz cabin features and technologies. All European models will now meet Euro 5 emission standards.

New engines expected include Benz's latest 5.5 liter twin-turbo V8 which will replace the normally-aspirated 5.5 liter V8 of the G500 in order to offer more power and better fuel economy. An AMG G 63 is in play for 2012, likely with a saucier version of that twin-turbo V8.

In fairness to the G-Class's styling, though, the whole point of its design is to stay true to its original iteration back in 1979 as a true off-road vehicle - one definitely not for the suburbanized SUV driver.

nah i asked. they did a special run of 55 AMGs a few years ago, but charged a ?30k premium on them. at the time i couldn't afford one even without the extra cost. since then i've been looking into getting one from Germany and getting it converted. Merc make the parts, but i've not had the time to sort it properly.

Last I read they were supposed to re-introduce the G to the UK this year. Not exactly sure when though, but I'm pretty sure they are. Check out Benzinsider.com I believe that is where I read it.

As I said, they're producing it in rhd form in Austria and it will be on sale, once again, in the UK for UK buyers.

I completely agree with you. This sentence should be "Inarguably the most stylish Benz around these days". It will look cool in 10 or 20 years from now, not like those SLKs with stupid headlight or funky C-classes

Sorry guys at WCF, this is the MOST stylish benz on the market. True to form and not trying to be anything other than what it is.

the only real change this SUV needs is a thorough re-engineering of its basic rigid-axle/leaf-spring suspension system to that of all-round fully independent double wishbone architecture , and that would result to a far better ride quality than ever before . the BRABUS V12 example is the best looking version of the lot .

tell that to all the armed forces who use the car and then watch their reaction.

it's about time that NATO forces realized that for all the technical expertise that MB has , it had given them a vehicle equipped with an archaic suspension system normally employed on horse-drawn carriages , and i don't see MB repeating this blatant mistake on any of their current SUVs if this statement is incorrect . if MB is really serious about continuing this vehicle's legacy/marketability , then it should incorporate GENUINELY comprehensive improvements and not just increase the capacity of it's engine . engineers at Zuffenhausen are far more flexible/progressive in their approach towards upgrading the characteristic of its UNBROKEN 911 series as they retained the classic 911 shape yet they were never too lazy to polish this car's attributes on all fronts over the passage of time , something that could not be said of those engineers over at Stuttgart . SORRY , MERCEDES BENZ , YOUR PRODUCT ADVERTISEMENTS ARE COMPLETELY DEVOID OF ANY CREATIVE IMAGINATION AS THE GELANDWAGENs LIFE-CYCLE DEVELOPMENT .

Sorry Mr. Renaissanceman but you have missed the whole point of the G-class. There is a reason the suspension has remained rigid axle and that's because it is the strongest to withstand constant hitting of potholes at speed as well as the best in 'real' offroad performance. From the warzones of Nato to the rural potholed roads in Africa, the G is a tank. Even the Toyota landcruiser can't withstand the abuse from the roads like the G-class. This is the G-class's best selling point. If you have ever visited countries like Uganda you would be surprised by the number of G-classes on the road. While it is more expensive to buy it is cheaper to run in the long run as many owners I've met in Uganda will testify. Some comment on how they drove the vehicle for up to 4 years without changing anything in the suspension where as in a previous Landcruiser they were in the garage every month to change bits and bobs of their suspension systems. Another thing that is mentioned is while the tarmac road handling is better on a new Landcruiser when it comes to driving for miles on end, on a potholed road, the G-class is more comfortable as each pothole sends shockwaves through the other SUVS whereas the G-class just takes it with ease and you don't feel like you are damaging something. So please don't change the suspension MB. You have the GL or ML for those that want the best on road ride! Leave the tank as it is!

This car is a legend, greatest SUV ever imho. If Merc knows what's good for em, they won't try and fix something that isn't broken.

updates= new mirrors with the new "arrow" signal lights in them, new headlight, tail lights, wheels, and a new interior. All the G class needs... which is really nothing

Like I've said before the G-Class is a classic. It's like a great monumental building that keeps getting better with better HVAC systems and telecommunications wiring. The basic form remains the same and withstand time...but the innards are upgraded to accomodate the advances in technology to make it a better place. Too bad it's not sold in my country...and those that do make it in as a grey import are snatched up at a premium...
