When BMW releases the next generation 2012 BMW M5, the car will be sold with a turbocharged V8 engine, according to Dr. Kay Segler.  Segler, the managing director of BMW M GmbH, says that the performance-oriented mid-sized four-door will share powerplant technology with the X5 M and X6 M.

The petrol engine is expected to produce between 580 PS (427 kW / 572 bhp) and 600 PS (441 kW / 592 bhp), and could likely use two twin-scroll turbochargers.  Despite rumors to the contrary, it does not appear that a diesel will be available on the next M5 when it comes to market in the last half of 2011.  Still, "diesel and sportiness are not mutually exclusive,” Segler told Auto Bild.  Seglar notes that many 3er and 5er diesel owners purchase the M-Sport kit and M-badged options for their car.

Ultimately, BMW wants this car to be viewed as a daily driver more capable of kicking the competition off the track.  “The philosophy of 'Two Cars in One,' which we have once established, you will find it explicitly in this vehicle,"

Look for the concept version of the 2012 BMW M5 to be introduced in 2011 at Geneva.

Can't wait to see new M5 once again beaten by CTS-V on the Ring

Hopefully it is as lean as the E AMG. RS6 is due for a new generation so Audi is still leadign the horsepower warz

The new M5 will squarely thrash the (golf) Caddy on the 'ring. I would imagine Germans take that seriously. Plus they seem to be all about engineering one-upmanship. Also, Audi only make a certain number of RS models at a time. With the current 5, 6 and TT, their quota is filled for now. I mean, so you see a New RS4? I would imagine this to be right up there as the banchmark, but mostly because it always is. And no, I'm not a BMW fanboy. If I see one with 'X' or 'GT' on it, I'm trained by common sense and good taste to dislike it. Also orange people in convertible Beemers. They're usually tossers...

I like Turbos...but I still remember BMW said that turbo-charging and super-charging was only necessary for unsophisticated engines...lol

Let's see if these engines have the same cantankerous issues over the high pressure pump (failures) that plague the N54 straight 6 in the outgoing 5 series.

Hopefully they scrap that POS SMG, they should be ashamed of themselves to even consider putting that piece of crap in a production car. And I'd love to see how it compares to a Panamera Turbo. The M5 used to be the benchmark in sports saloons. Porsche raised the bar, to the moon. Anyone, I mean anyone is welcome to bring out their car to compare to a Panamera. There is none. It is truly, the only 4 door sports car. Everything else is a high horsepower sedan. I've driven them all, no comparison.

They don't use SMG, that is on the e46 m3 and even the euro e36. Both of which are a decade old now. Its called M-DCT and its always been a success. You are wrong, you don't have to be a prophet to know that the next GEN M5 will be the new benchmark. It beat the Panamera as soon as it was announced. Porsches real benchmark is the new GT2.

they did use SMG in the E60 M5. In Germany it even was ONLY available with this gearbox, only in the US you were able to get one with a manual. The M-DCT is only available in the E90/92/93 M3.

BavarianMS put his vast knowledge for judge again. M5 E60 had SMG and it is crap. It works on track, but everywhere else is just plainly rubbish. And if you don't know how to use it properly it fails quite often. DCT is the way to go.

I finally sat in a Panamera yesterday. From a luxury standpoint, I'd take a RS6, M5, or E63 any day.

I am not too happy about the change. Twin turbos! I really want to see how that engine will survive in extreme heat. The temp currently where I am is 48C and rising. Forced induction my ars? I much prefer a well cooled powerhouse!!!

997, this engine will perform really well in high temps. I live in the gulf, and the X6M and 50i are both great in this heat!

Really well!!! I have several turbos, more heat, more problems.. My buddy has an X6M, we'll see if it busts. I live in the gulf too ;)

I believe they're right. High revving NA engines should be more sophisticated as they require much more effort to squeez out more horsepower without forced induction. But I agree with their choice of having a turbo because they can't afford being outgunned by it's rivals in fuel economy and CO2 emissions. ***Sadly, I really do like ultra high revving NA engines..... 5L V10 good bye.....

WaW they took a perfectly looking 5-series and made it look like an ugly seven series for old people... great job BMW, I wonder who would be buying a car looking like that with that much power, who would want to... get some advice from Mercedes and Audi on the new models, and also on their engines, oh yea twin turbo sounds nice, but say hello to turbo lag on a big/heavy car like that hmmm doesn't sound too good.

Looks like the only guy surrendering is the guy in the passenger seat :) Merc will be back,if they surrendered the next launch wouldn't be a 5,5l TT V8.Plus there's still an SLS Black Series that NEEEEEEEDS to be made.As long as there's Mercedes n BMW,there'll be war.On all fronts.Efficiency,gadgets,performance...History set the precedent

997-etc.. heat = more problems?? duhh! "I really want to see how that engine will survive in extreme heat.". I was refering to ur previous post on whether it would survive. I bought my X6 50i 2 yrs ago, and I haven't had any problems with it whatsoever. Of course it will be a bit slower in temps exceeding 40C, but it will survive and still quite fast ;)

As I already said yesterday, pathetic BMW and Audi fans... You can put 6 x turbo, maybe 1.500 hp, I'm sure that will be enough for BMW guys who suffer from complexes of inferiority...
