Unless there's a big, powerful, tech-laden RWD car in the pipeline, we'll be saying goodnight to Lincoln in the near future too...

You forgot Studebaker, Packard, Hudson, De Soto, Edsel, Rambler and Plymouth.

Lincoln will need a lot to really shine, from a Mustang based sports car, to a new Continental big sedan, a compact car and a global dealer network witch won't be hard to get since Ford is a global brand. I do hope that someday Mercury will be revived and set against Buick.

This is a great idea... and it's about time! This *should* really help Ford focus on making two, high quality, and distinctive brands. As has been said before, sometimes less is more.

... eh. I dont think anyone cares.

It is sad to see American brands been shut down by bad decisions the management did along the time, it was a matter of time for Mercury to be the next, they just didn't have the brain to get it out of the crap as GM did with Buick.
I am a car designer and among my cars i have a Mercury Milan, i must say is a nicely balanced and pretty design, i love the looks of the car and i don't plan to get rid off it but i wish the car had more power over its ford cousin, more features and more luxury inside, come on, even the Hyundai Sonata has more bells and whistles.
I hope the decision makers leading the design and the brands wake up soon and start making the right moves instead of shutting down the brands due to their poor decisions.
